NotsoObliiiiiiii asked:
I applied to nannies4hire and a woman wrote me inquiring about an interview. She wants someone to care for her 3 month old son, which is in my age group. On her profile it says she wants someone to start by the 27th of October, but I noticed they say that and then if no one responds by then they just keep looking anyways. Well I am getting my license this Saturday and if all goes well then I’ll immediately set up the interview. I have had my temps for two years (renewed them) and I’m a good driver.

The problem is I need to be able to tell her that I’m getting married November the 7th and to ask her if I can start that monday after. I realize that’s two weeks after what she originally wanted, and if she says she needs me before then my fiance and I will postpone it. We’re not having a wedding or honeymoon we’re just signing the paper, but I’m pretty sure I have to be at the government office on a weekday during business hours, and I have to pick my fiance up four hours away.
If I even ask her, do you think she’ll still hire me? I know many women prefer nannies who are not in relationships. But I won’t be having kids of my own for three or four years or more.
Suggestions???

I would just ask her. She was more than likely married at one point (or still is) and will understand.

As a former nanny who is married, I understand your concern. Often there were times during interviews when I knew me being married would be an issue.
Of course, you want to be upfront about getting married, and when you are, then being married. But to a lot of parents, this signifies a settled nanny, a woman who is focused on her life and husband and is (some of the time
) out of the party/dating faze. And for many families, that is a must in a nanny.
Be sure to have a great portfolio and references when you interview. Stress how important flexibility in a job is to you, and that you understand that you’ll need to work with their schedule.
But don’t let a potential job deter you from your happiness – any family that truly wants you as their nanny will be willing to wait for such an important event in your life. There are many options for a small wait, like temps and sitters.
Good luck!
