Both parents that are employed have become a common setup in most families today. The society has become open-minded with the need for mothers to help provide for the family. Thus, proper child-rearing has been a strong and primary concern for working parents especially if children have reached the school age. The parents’ responsibility is to find reputable institutions or individuals which will provide the proper childcare that the children needs.

Childcare Options

Childcare refers to the supervision of children in the absence of parents or guardians. Childcare is called for when there are minor children in the house that needs taking care of. When parents are away from work, the childcare provider shall act as the second parent. In some cases, parents require childcare for children when they need to spend quality time together away from home.

Depending on situations of parents and the age of children, childcare may be an every day or occasional requirement. Childcare may be done in the home of the kids, in the home of the childcare provider or in an established childcare or daycare centres.

Most parents choose in-home childcare such as the nanny, babysitter, au pair and governess because of the belief that their home is safer for the children.

The Nanny

In the old days, nannies are employed only by the rich or the aristocrats. Nowadays, many families employ nannies for childcare excluding the traditional concept of a nanny who wears a uniform.

A nanny is an individual who looks after children to provide the necessary childcare. Basic duties include childcare during the agreed hours set by the employer; supports the intellectual and social development of children; protection of children from harm; meal preparations; proper communication with the employers; and sometimes maintenance of cleanliness of the home.

The nanny may be hired as a live-in or live-out employee on a full-time basis. Formal training is not commonly required but advantageous. Parents prefer that a nanny has previous on the job experience.

The Babysitter

Unlike a nanny, a babysitter is hired on a part-time basis only usually when parents are still at work or out on weekends. Babysitting requires no formal training. Mostly, babysitters are teenagers who need the extra money. While training is not required, babysitters should have the right skills in times of emergency.

The Au Pair

A French term which means “equal to”, the au pair is a foreigner, usually an unmarried woman of 18 to 26 years old, who visits a host family for a period of two years. The au pair is intended to be considered a part of the family and receives a personal allowance and a private room. During her stay, the au pair is tasked to help in childcare and household chores of the host family.

Considering the meaning, the au pair is not a domestic helper. An au pair is included in all the daily activities of the family and attends social events with them. Being an au pair is an opportunity for travel and cultural exposure.

The Governess

The governess is a trained and educated childcare provider who is solely employed for the education of children.

Choosing the right childcare option for the family takes considerable time and extensive research. It is noteworthy to consider that parents should never depend on childcare providers alone to support the growth of children. More importantly, parents must remain to balance time to be with the children in the growing up years.

Urban legends are a great way to lighten a party as an ice breaker. It is fascinating to see how people’s imaginations are engaged in high gear when these stories are told. Urban legends have interested writes for decades, and eventually these stories make their way into film, television, and other popular media.

1. Baby in the oven

A babysitter is hired to take care of an infant. The babysitter, sometimes mentioned as a hippie, under the influence of narcotics places the baby in either the conventional or microwave. The parents later returned to find the smell of burning flesh in their house. Finally, they traced the smell to the kitchen whereby inspecting the oven find their baby dead.

2. Crocodiles in the sewage

Originally from New York with its large sewage system which lends itself to the imagination. Here a baby alligator is given to a kid as a pet. As the reptile grows it becomes unwieldy and needs to be disposed. The animal is flushed down the toilet, but instead of dieing it manages to survive. Feeding mainly on rodents the gator grows to an astonishing size. Eventually, it seeks revenge on all those who fare into the sewage system.

3. Dial 911 in an emergency

Dialing for emergencies has been publicized as “call nine eleven.” Here a scared victim tries to call for assistance, but do to fear can not do so. The reason is the victim doesn’t seem to be able to find the button with the number eleven on the phone.

4. The $50 dollar sport scar

A man is required by court to sell his car as part of a divorce settlement. On completion of the sale, he is required to give half to his ex-wife. The irate divorcee sells his very expensive sports car, usually a Porsche or Jaguar, for 50 dollars. On completion of the sale and as required by court, he joyfully mails a check for 25 dollars to his ex-wife.

5. Home from the war

A young man returning from the war calls his family from a distant airport. He tells his mother that he is back and on his way. He wants to bring a fellow soldier to come and live with them. The soldier was completely crippled as a result of wounds sustained. The mother informs him that it would be very hard to take care of this person for the rest of his life and politely refuses. A few days later, the mother gets a call form an officer informing her that her son was found dead in a hotel room. Apparently, the son was the crippled soldiers all a long.

6. Flashing lights

A car drives a desolated highway and sees an upcoming car with the lights off. The concerned driver flashes his lights to let the upcoming vehicle of his error. The car passes by without turning the lights on. The car suddenly makes a turn and catches up to the car that flashed the lights. Upon forcing the car to stop, the offending driver shoots and kills the Good Samaritan. There is evidence to support that some gangs now use this method to initiate their members

7. Mouse in the soft drink bottle

One of the most well known urban legends, a man drinks a soft drink out of the bottle or sometimes a can. As he finishes the drink and much to his dismay, he realizes there is a rodent inside the container all along. There were actually several lawsuits in the 1930 proving that it could happen or at least that it can be faked.

8. The winning lottery ticket

A man at a bar watches the television intensely as the winning numbers of the state lottery are announce. Excited, he announces to his friends that he has the winning ticket. The ticket is passed from friend to friend, so that all can see the winning numbers. When the ticket is returned to the winner, he notices the numbers in the ticket have changed.

9. Dial revenge

A young man breaks up with his girlfriend and asks her to leave the apartment they both occupy. A few days latter the young man comes home to find his girlfriend thing gone and his untouched. He notices the telephone receiver off the hook. When he picks up, the astounded man hears the time been repeated over and over in Japanese. The angry ex had called the time service in Tokyo, and it had been off the hook for several hours.

10. The suicide rule

Many college students to this day still believe that if a roommate commits suicide, their grade point average will immediately be bumped to 4.0. However, there is no such rule documented anywhere in the regulations of any school nor there is evidence that ever was such a rule.

Whether based on reality or imagination urban legends focus on real fears. Perhaps, the interest might come from a primordial instinct of self preservation. At any rate, urban legends are fun and interesting tales to be told at parties or over a fire camp.

If you’re working just for the money, you’re in the wrong job.

Why is it that one man or woman’s job search produces a dream career while another’s turns out to be a nightmare? The often overlooked reason is personality mismatches with the chosen career.

If you want to find the right career, firstyou must look inwardly and identify your personality traits. If the career you are thinking about matches your character analysis, you’ve hit the jackpot. The result? The best job in the world, right in your own back pocket.

Too many artists and musicians were steered into accounting jobs. Too many potential athletes are laying concrete. Are you in the right job for your personality?

If you’re living a spiritual lifestyle and you want practical career guidance in finding the career your Soul longs for, then let’s make sure you are on the right track.

I will show you how to find the job that best matches your personality.

Let me give you an example of a big mismatch and perhaps it will seem familiar to you. One of the worst jobs I ever had was when I desperately needed a job to help support my marriage and baby. My cousin encouraged me to apply at her manufacturing, assembly-line-type company in North Hollywood, California.

The pay wasn’t very good. I was standing for very long periods of time and the work never changed. The reason this was not the best job for me was because my personality and the position were mismatched. They needed someone who wanted and enjoyed repetitive, quiet work and I thought it was akin to jail.

If I’d only known my own needs before I took that job, I would have chosen better. We do better when we know better. What I really needed from any job was an exciting career that would not add to my family problems.

This job was a total mismatch because:

I missed my baby and felt guilty for leaving her with a baby sitter. This job pulled me away from home for nine hours a day.

I love people and am quite a talker. Those I worked with were great, but we were encouraged to work quickly and quietly. I needed regular social interaction.

I am naturally curious and like to try new things. Assembly line work at this company only provided repetitive work. I thought I would go crazy!

After only working one month, I quit and began a job search for one that better matched my personality.

It’s imperative that if you are going to find work you love, that you define your own personality and look for the spiritual gifts (these would be skills, talents, values, interests and hobbies) you were born with. Once you know this information you can go out and get the career of your dreams.

Begin with these simple questions:

Which do I prefer, mental work or physical work?

Which do I prefer, working indoors or out?

Would I rather work alongside others in a group effort, or work alone?

When you answer these 3 simple questions, you will have begun the journey of Discovering Your Life’s Work. Why would a “social butterfly” work at night in a back room alone? Why would an insomniac work days? Why would an idea person pull weeds?

The journey of Discovering Your Life’s Work will be thrilling and life-fulfilling. Begin by asking yourself those 3 questions and start a good business plan. The career match for your personality is just around the corner.

Hiring a babysitter or nanny comes with taking precautionary measures to make sure that you child or children are being properly taken care of. Every parent has that nightmare of a nanny that could abuse their children, even though they wish it not to happen. Taking the necessary steps to avoid the occurrence of such an unsightly event can mean the difference between life and death.

For those eight hours that you may be gone to work or a few hours away from your children makes a whole lot of difference in the world. Your childrens safety is at stake and at the hands of a stranger who you do not yet know enough about. How do you protect your children without feeling as if you are violating someone else’s privacy? What is most important? I would think that childrens security is more important. Make sure you learn more about your local laws in terms of installing a video camera in your home.

Even if you have thoroughly investigated your nanny, you should still have a nanny wireless camera installed in your home. You can go through the whole gamut of background checks, references and credit checks and still not know all you can about the nanny. The background check, references, and credit check will not reveal the child care providers personality or mood. You have to find that out the hard way or through the process of installing a hidden wireless camera especially if your children are very young and not able to explain themselves.

When your nanny leaves after you get home, you can put in the tape and watch the video to see what transpired while you were away from home. You may be shocked to see how the nanny spends the day or what she is doing to your child or children. What if you have a crazy nanny who drinks on the job or who shakes your child so hard because the child is crying? You would want to know, would you not?

A wireless hidden spy camera is the best way and most inexpensive method of having some extra eyes for you while you are gone. There are some day cares that have cameras installed and set up with the Internet so mothers especially can look at what their child is doing during the day. I think this is a brilliant idea. So why is it that homeowners who hire nannies to take care of their children are not doing the same thing?

Of course, they can. The nanny hidden spy cameras are manufactured and disguised in the form of stuffed animals, soda cans, wall clocks, radios, mirrors, vases, and even picture frames. This will give parents the peace of mind to know that they have something to rely on that will provide some type of protection for their children.

Hidden wireless cameras add safety and security to every home and business. It provides a security level that is necessary in this society that we live in. No more can people be totally trusted to perform their duties when you are absent. The nanny wireless hidden camera is a parents best friend.

Your child’s first year of school should be a fun and exciting
time. Children who are comfortable with and prepared for this
first school experience are more likely to have rewarding and
productive years, and therefore associate positive feelings with
education. Since parents are children’s first and most
important teachers, you can play a key role in preparing your
children for a successful school experience by pre-exposing them
to key concepts they will experience in school. This can be
done in a fun, enjoyable manner by making everyday play
experiences learning experiences as well.

New learning builds on prior knowledge, therefore the more
exposure or background a child has with a concept the easier it
is for new learning and deeper comprehension to occur.
Providing your child with pre-exposure to concepts such as the
alphabet, numbers, following directions, listening, reading,
cutting, tracing, etc. will help them feel more comfortable and
confident when they experience these similar concepts in school,
thus better enabling learning to occur. Schools are becoming
more academic, dependent on standardized tests, and fast-paced.
Giving your children some familiarity with concepts they will
encounter can help lessen the anxiety and stress that often
accompany these experiences. Children who are overly stressed
or uncomfortable are less likely to be able to concentrate and
learn.

Children have a natural motivation to learn and a curiosity
about the world. You can enhance and nurture this natural
motivation by making enjoyable play experiences learning
experiences as well.

For example, children’s games are great resources for combining
learning with physical activity. Duck, Duck, Goose can be a way
of reinforcing concepts such as the alphabet by having children
say the name of a letter in place of the word, duck, and a word
that begins with that letter in place of the word, goose.

Hide and Seek can become a learning experience by hiding numbers,
letters, colors, your child’s name, phone number, address, etc.
around the house and asking your child to find them.

Simon Says is a great game to practice following
directions and positional words such as on, above, below, etc.

Bingo can be used to reinforce number recognition, letter
recognition, the difference between upper case and lower case
letters, letter sounds, colors, etc.

You can have a treasure hunt while shopping, driving, or at home
by seeing how many letters, numbers, colors, or shapes your
child can find.

You can also play I Spy where you state, “I spy with my little
eye something that is…” and you describe a letter, number,
shape, color, etc. that you can plainly see. Your child then
tries to guess what you are describing. Your child can also
take a turn describing something (this helps develop verbal
skills).

Children’s individual interests can also be incorporated into
learning experiences.

Blocks or Lego’s can be used to teach patterns
(have them build towers with alternating colors), counting,
sorting (separate the blocks by colors, shapes, size), etc.

If your child likes to color, have them create rainbow tracings
of letters or numbers by tracing them with as many colors as
possible.

Play dough can be made into shapes, letters, and numbers.

An interest in cars and trucks can be used when learning how to
trace by telling your child to keep his car (crayon or pencil)
on the road (whatever is being traced).

An interest in animals or dinosaurs can be used when learning
how to cut with scissors by relating the opening and closing of
the scissors to the opening and closing of an animal’s mouth.
You can pretend the animal is “eating” the lines on the paper.

Your child’s surroundings can also play a part in preparing them
for school. Providing a number and variety of books for your
child and taking time to read to them is one of the most
important things you can do for their education. Reading to a
child teaches them vocal skills, vocabulary, listening skills,
left-to-right orientation, cause and effect, knowledge about the
world around them, and pre-reading skills. Most importantly, it
instills a love for reading and books which will benefit them
throughout their entire education. After all, every subject
(even math) requires reading.

Our brain absorbs information from our surroundings on a
conscious and unconscious level, and between 80-90% of all
information absorbed by the brain is visual. Therefore,
providing visual displays in your child’s room or elsewhere can
actually aide in learning. Things such as the alphabet, colors,
numbers, etc. can be hung up or displayed in places where your
child will see them. Even magnetic letters on the refrigerator
can aide in retention and learning. This is why many schools
have plenty of visuals displayed in the halls and classrooms.

Young children can also learn many concepts through music.
For example, they usually learn their abc’s by the alphabet
song. There are many children’s tapes available that teach
concepts through music. Playing these while in the car or while
your children play can aide them in learning. Even though they
might not be singing along or seem like they are even paying
attention, subconscious learning can be occurring.

You may also want to practice separating from your child for
short periods of time, such as enrolling in a program or play
group or having them spend time with a babysitter. Separation
anxiety can be traumatic for some children if they are not used
to being away from their parents, and this anxiety can inhibit
their ability to learn and relax while in school.

Lastly, no matter what methods you try with your child, the most
important thing to remember is to make them enjoyable. You
want your child to associate positive feelings with learning.
Take turns choosing activities; give your child some choice
sometimes. This makes them feel less dictated to and more
willing to learn. Also, offer them some variety in activities,
do not always use the same learning methods all of the time as
this can create boredom and disinterest. Choose the methods
that work best with your child (every child is different) and
have fun!

Children are like flowers, they all bloom at different times.
But, parents can help nurture them by providing experiences that
enable them to blossom into children who love learning and
school.

Rebellion is the result of conflicting authority. When authority can’t provide a united front, it is very dangerous. There are several things you can do to provide a unified front before your kids.

1. Discuss rules and discipline together. Come to a full agreement on all aspects of it–before you implement them.

2. Never, never, never, never argue in front of your children. If you have a disagreement, discuss it when the kids are asleep, or when they’re not around. All growing up, I never one time heard my parents argue with each other. I can’t tell you how secure and happy my brother and I were growing up. Don’t argue in front of your children.

3. Don’t contradict each other in front of the children. This may not result in an argument, but it could be just as destructive. If your kids see that there is a side to take, they’ll always side with the one that seems in his best interest.

4. Make sure that the parent who did the disciplining is the one to show mercy. If you are always stepping in to show mercy, the child will grow to resent the other parent. Mercy should always come from the disciplining parent. Always.

5. Always be consistent yourself. Hypocrisy with your kids is just another form of conflicting authority. Your words and your actions ought to match. If you tell your kids that smoking is wrong, then don’t smoke yourself!

6. Make sure that your children know that you ALWAYS back up your spouse. I have a policy with my kids. If they come to me, or to my wife, and try to get a reduced sentence, or hoping to play parent against parent, I always make the consequences stricter. It’s interesting how fast my children learned not to do that.

7. Make sure your kids know the rules and consequences ahead of time. Don’t spring it on them after they have done wrong. They will not think that is fair. That will cause rebellion too, and it is another type of conflicting authority.

8. Back up other authority as well. If it be a babysitter, a coach, a teacher, a principle, or a police officer, always back up the authority. There are a few exceptions to this rule which I will discuss shortly. But as a general rule, it is a good one.

WHAT ABOUT IF THE AUTHORITY IS WRONG?

This is where you must show a tremendous amount of good judgment and wisdom. Messing up here, even when authority is wrong, could still create the seeds of rebellion in a child.

Look, I’d rather a child be punished too severely and see a united front than to witness conflicting authority. The other side is true too. I would rather see punishment that doesn’t go far enough than to see conflicting authority.

That said—there are some things you can do when authority is wrong.

Address the other authority privately.

If a teacher is wrong in some action against your child, go to the teacher privately and discuss it with them. If you can come to an agreement, it ought to be the teacher that goes to your kid and admits the wrong.

For anyone, when authority apologizes, it actually helps to establish that authority more firmly. To be able to apologize when you are wrong gives you more credence and weight to your authority.

Establish A Chain Of Command!

This is how the army solves the authority conflict issue. Now in the home, before the children, the parents ought to be perfectly united. However, we recognize that not all authority is equal. A parent ought to have a higher level of authority over a child than say a school principal.

If the principal demands something that is automatically in conflict with the parental authority, the parental authority ought to win out. This chain of command ought to be made known to your children.

For example, a major has higher authority than a lieutenant. If both give a private an order, which order does he obey? The major’s of course. You always default to the higher authority. Teach this concept to your children.

So if there is a conflict of authority, you simply point out that, in this case, the higher authority is always right. This will help your children to be yielded to authority instead of picking and choosing, or playing one against the other.

But, try your best not to have to contradict that authority. The less you have to do that, the better.

When we are learning any foreign language, we are bound to compare it with our mother tongue (let’s assume that yours is English).

Learning Russian has already brought you pleasant surprises — for example, remember the moment when you found out that spelling in Russian is much simpler than in English? It means that it is easier for a learner to start reading. You don’t agree and think that reading Russian is difficult? Then imagine a native Russian-speaker learning English and trying to figure out how to read double-o in words like “book”, “floor”, or “blood”. If he hasn’t yet heard these words and the teacher is far away at the moment, learning how to read takes tremendous effort. Compared to him, YOU are lucky.

But all the same — reading in Russian can sometimes be tricky for a beginner, whose native language is English. Hard and soft consonants are usually the most difficult thing for a student to remember.

In English it doesn’t matter whether the consonant you pronounce is hard or soft, but in Russian it can make another word. Your teacher surely has told you this, but there is a pretty long distance between knowing a rule and applying it automatically. That is why beginners often read words like “СЕЛ” and “СЪЕЛ” the same. Listening, memorizing, imitating native speakers will help — in time. What to do here and now, especially if there is no tutor to correct?

Well, you can control your reading yourself so you won’t confuse “Он сел” (He sat down/have sat down) Он съел… (He has eaten…).

To sort out this mess with the consonants, let’s take a look at Russian VOWELS. Yes, vowels, because that’s what causes the trouble. There are 4 vowels that soften the preceding consonant — Я, Ё, Е, Ю, И…

But probably we’d better begin from the beginning.

Let’s divide Russian vowels into two groups:

Group 1: А О Э У Ы

Group 2: Я Ё Е Ю И

Have you noticed something? Not yet? Well, let’s put them in pairs: А –Я, О – Ё, Э – Е, У – Ю, Ы – И

Now you see…Я sounds ЙА, Ё is ЙО, Ю is ЙУ and Е is ЙЭ.

Now the pairs are like: А –ЙА, О – ЙО, Э – ЙЭ, У – ЙУ

In 4 out of 5 pairs the sound from the second group = Й + the sound from the first group.

Remember that, it will help you in reading.

Now some good news: You will never have any problem reading vowels from the Group 1. Letters А,О,Э,У,Ы are read always the same.

Now about Group 2.
Letters Я,Ё,Е,Ю can cause some trouble in reading. What’s more, they are responsible for most of your foreign accent when you’re speaking Russian. To avoid both, remember these simple rules:

If letters Я,Е,Ё,Ю,И go after a consonant, they:
soften this consonant
AND
Я,Е,Ё,Ю lose Й and turn into А,Э,О,У

Example: the word НЯНЯ (a nanny, a babysitter)
The most common mistake is reading it as н’йа-н’йа (an apostrophe after the letter means the sound is soft).
The right pronunciation is н’а-н’а
more examples: ВЕСНА = в’эсна (spring)

The letter И after a consonant simply softens it (it has no Й to lose).
СИНИЙ = с’и-н’ий (navy blue)
МИР = м’ир (world/peace)

You read these four letters AS THEY ARE IN THE ALPHABET (Я=ЙА, etc.) ONLY WHEN THESE LETTERS DON’T FOLLOW A CONSONANT.

It happens when:
The word begins with such a letter: Яблоко = read it as ЙАблоко (apple)
Ёжик = ЙОжык (hedgehog)
Ехать = ЙЕхать (to go, usually by some means of transport)
Юпитер = ЙУп’ит’эр (Jupiter) When such a letter follows a vowel: маЯк = маЙАк (lighthouse)
моЁ =моЙО (mine, or my – with a neuter noun, like my coat = моё пальто)
приЕхать =приЙЭхать (to come by some means of transport) When these vowels follow Ъ and Ь.These two letters indicate that after them those 4 vowels will sound as йа, йэ, йо, йу. That’s what Ъ and Ь and are for.

ВЪЕЗД=вЙЕзд (entrance for transport)

СВИНЬЯ= свин’ЙА (pig)

But how to use all this to improve reading? For example, you can do like this:
Print a page with the Russian text you are going to read Underline the Group 2 vowels in this text (Я,Е,Ё,Ю,И) Start reading, paying attention to where these letters are in the word – at the beginning of a word; after ъ, ь, or a vowel; or after a consonant.
Very soon you won’t need to underline these vowels anymore.

Just a couple of more tips to keep in mind:

When you see ЦИ, read it as ЦЫ:

ЦИРК = цЫрк (circus)

The same with ЖИ and ШИ – they sound ЖЫ and ШЫ:

ЖИВОЙ = жЫвой (alive)

ШИТЬ=ШЫть (to sew)

Remember what your teacher told you about reading unstressed vowels. They sound more relaxed than stressed ones. Pretty much the same as in English – compare two Os in the word “doctor”

The similar thing happens to consonants at the end of Russian words. Some of them (called sonants) begin to sound more like other sounds, called breath consonants: Б sounds like П, В – Ф, Б – П, and the like (see textbooks). Just pronounce consonants at the end of words with less strain, and you will say them correct – automatically.

Keep training and soon your reading and speaking skills will be superb. Good luck!
