Many parents are in the process of hiring new babysitters as the new school year begins. Sometimes finding the right person for your family can be more difficult than you might think, but sitters with the right qualities can be a real asset to your family.

If you are in search of a new babysitter or nanny for your children, here are some qualities that every great babysitter should have:

Dependability and Responsibility: Dependability is a must. After all, they are responsible for the children’s health, safety and welfare while you are away.

Overall good health: A babysitter may be great with the kids, but if your sitter is sick all the time, you may have to find a last-minute replacement too often.

A Love of Kids: The best babysitters just really love children. Kids usually know whether someone likes them or is just doing a job. Ask them to spend some time with your children while you are home. That way you can see the interaction yourself.

Maturity: Babysitters need act calmly in an emergency. They have to maintain authority and discipline to gain the respect of your children.

Knowledge about children: Your babysitter should have at least a little understanding of the basic techniques of feeding, dressing, diapering, and playing with younger and older children.

Adaptability: It’s your house with your family’s usual patterns and routines. Your babysitter should adapt to your routines, not try to change them.

If you find a nanny or sitter with these qualities, it will make life so much easier for you and so much more fun for your kids!
