Choosing Baby Names

Take Your Time

The worst thing you could do when choosing a baby name is to rush into it. Settling for second best may affect you and your child for a lifetime! Don’t commit yourself to the first name that you fancy. Keep searching until you find a name that you are 110% happy with. And don’t forget that you don’t need to have a name for your baby before birth. Some parents have been known to wait 2 or 3 weeks before deciding on that perfect name.

What Does it Mean?

Some parents don’t really care for the meaning of their baby’s name, where as others base their decision solely around it. But, in our opinion a quick check couldn’t hurt. Do you really want your big strong boy to have a name that means “pretty flower”? If you have a meaning in mind, but don’t know what names contain that meaning, visit our baby names and meanings database.

Spelling

Try to make sure you don’t choose a name that ends with the same letter that your last name begins with. This can sometimes make pronunciation a challenge. There are some exceptions to this rule, but in general it is best to keep it in mind when choosing a baby name. Try it for yourself and you’ll see what we mean. Letters like “l” and “s” are especially bad.

Say it Out Loud

Instead of referring to your unborn baby as he or she or “the baby”, try using one of the names that you like for a week or so. Saying it out loud and using it in common sentences will give you a better idea of how much you really like the name. Don’t forget, some names look great when written on paper, but sound terrible off the tongue.

Initials, Nicknames and Middle Names

There have been some embarrassing mistakes made when choosing baby names in the past. One of these is the uncanny chance of initials forming some undesirable abbreviation. ‘I P Daily’ is just one classic that springs to mind. Is what I’m trying to say is that you should always double check what the initials of your baby name choice are. Also think about possible nicknames that will be used to shorten your choice of baby name. You may love the name Robert, but **** the name Rob or Robby. When it’s time for your child to start going to school, there is a 99.9% chance that he will be known as Rob or Robby instead of Robert.

This also applies to using a suffix. If you are going to name your child after yourself or your partner, such as John Edward Mitchell III, remember that you will probably end up referring to the child by its middle name to avoid confusion. Therefore it is also important to remember all of these things when choosing a middle name for your little one.

Above all these baby naming tips, choosing a baby name can be broken down into two parts. Baby naming tip number one: choose a name that you think your child will be happy with. Baby naming tip number two: choose a name that both parents are 110% happy with. Follow these two main rules and everyone will be happy. Best of luck to you!

Naming your new baby boy is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make in your life and it will affect your boys life forever. This article discusses 5 tips to help you ensure you make the right decision, hopefully taking some of the stress out of it too!

1. You should begin by creating a set of criteria and organize these into a list in order of importance. Some of the questions you should ask yourself when making this list should be: Should it be unusual (like Tarquin) or popular (like Joe)? Should it be related to a member of the family or a famous historic figure ? Could you create your own name? Long or short? Should the initials make a word? Should it have a religious meaning?

2. Once you’ve answered these questions and defined the categories that are important to you, it’s worth spending some time on the possible downsides of these options, as only then will you be truly prepared. For instance, making up your own name seem like a great idea, but will it lead to the child getting bullied?

3. Begin brainstorming. You’ve probably already thought of some specific names, but it’s very important to keep an open mind. You should not focus only on choosing among the short list you already have, but rather try to expand this list with new ideas. Its worthwhile asking friends and family for ideas, as this may spark off a whole new tangent. It’s also possible to alter a name you like by adding some letters, dropping others or even creating a hybrid of two names you like, maybe two grandparents.

4. The internet is a great source of baby name ideas. There are loads of sites that have 1000′s and 1000′s of names on them. Sometimes this can be overwhelming but don’t let it put you off as there is sure to be something that appeals to you, but it might take you a while to find! Some sites will also list names by origin or religion which may be useful.

5. Ask for advice and ideas. Don’t feel that choosing a name suggested by someone else makes it any less your own. Take advice from your friends, family, colleagues and anyone else that will offer an option! Even if you don’t like there idea, it may influence you in another way.

The Advantages of Autism

My husband and I are the sometimes-proud, sometimes-mortified parents of a four-and-a-half year old boy, Jonah, who has autism. Jonah is a bright, mischievous, affectionate, challenging, monkey of a kid. We love him and are managing our somewhat unusual lives pretty well. With autism, though, everything can seem like a challenge: meals, bath time, car trips, birthday parties, you name it.

Among other things, Jonah doesn’t talk and he doesn’t understand normal social cues. He’ll walk up to a stranger at the park and rifle through her picnic basket. He’ll climb up a playground slide without taking note of whether or not some kid is poised to slide down right into him. Every time he hears the song “Happy Birthday to You,” he marches up to the place of honor, ready to blow out the candles and tear into cake. When prevented, distracted, or redirected away from these activities, a tantrum is the likely result. And when the tantrum is in public, there’s usually the added fun of strangers’ stares, glares, and disapproving glances. I could go on…but this article isn’t about what autism is, or how it is difficult, or why its occurrence has risen to epidemic proportions. It’s about the advantages of autism. And really, there are several.

I have to admit right off the bat: I’m only being half-facetious when I say we fully intend to cash in on any and all emergent savant skills, like in the Las Vegas scene from Rain Man — but that doesn’t seem likely since they say only 10% or so of autists have these skills. Oh, well. Winning ridiculous amounts of money counting cards isn’t everything, I suppose. Good thing there are other things we can enjoy right now.

One is innocence. While other kids his age have “moved on” to superheroes and swords, our son still loves bubbles and blocks. While his peers have discarded traditional kids’ songs for pop music, Jonah still happily requests “Wheels on the Bus” – and does all the hand motions too. He doesn’t watch commercials then demand whatever toy or gadget or breakfast cereal was advertised. He doesn’t understand the concept of Christmas or birthdays, at least not in the way other kids do, so he’s perfectly happy with a few toys and something yummy to eat.

When our son is fully enjoying himself, there is no one as uninhibitedly delighted. A joyful Jonah is a beautiful sight. He is never embarrassed or self-conscious about what he is doing, and it shows. What you get is a child largely unaffected by most things that can’t help but affect the consciousness of other kids: bad news on TV, anxiety about dad leaving for work, fear of the boogeyman under the bed. In a sense, autism protects him from much of the normal worry, apprehension, and insecurity of being an almost-five-year-old kid.

Also, people have told us he’s especially entertaining to watch – and we can see why; the way he interacts with his environment is undeniably interesting. We consider it an advantage to have a child who sees the world through a somehow different lens. He’ll hold his fingers up to his eyes to catch an interesting visual, or **** his head to the side and look at things from an angle. He adores kaleidoscopes and spinning toys and flashlights and seems to see them in a way the rest of us can’t. He teaches us to stop, look, and listen to things in a manner that may never have occurred to us before.

There are advantages, even, to his silence. Though we’d love for him to learn to talk and are doing everything we can to help him learn to communicate verbally, it is nice to know he’s not going to start yelling obscenities in the mall or call the cops and tell them our house is on fire. He may perseverate on the light switch by turning it on and off a thousand times, but we’re never subjected to endless repetitions of movie quotes, nursery rhymes, or some random snippet of something he heard on TV.

In fact, we’ve come to find that for every challenge we face with Jonah, we’re presented an unexpected, precious, and often humorous gift. The gifts are what keep us going – for, as with everything in life, they balance out the bad and show us our son and situation in an ever-changing, beautiful light.

And perhaps that balance is, really, the greatest gift of all.

When considering starting a family, one thing stands out: the need to ensure that, as you begin having children, you commit to the responsibility of raising them with the knowledge that they are important and that they see themselves as worthy. A healthy self esteem can be a safeguard against challenges the world will present to anyone. When boosting self esteem in your children, they will be able to handle conflicts and reject any negative pressures from their peer group.

Children that are comfortable with themselves also reveal a well-rounded attitude, able to better excel in whatever is presented to them. By contrast, children who experience low self esteem tend to allow situations to overwhelm them. They are much more easily frustrated and can become anxious and irritable. They also display symptoms of an inability to solve issues, as well as become withdrawn or depressed.

Remember, you are the number one influence on your child, especially during their first five years before they even go off to school. It is vital you express the fact that they are loved and needed. You are their safeguard against low self esteem and the negative impact that can have on their lives. Whenever you can, give them praise for a job well done or for at least putting forth the effort. This should be easy since they already possess natural tendencies (not to mention the fact that they are your children!). Keep in mind though to be honest with your praise and not to praise them just because you are supposed to; they will see right through that.

Also, let them know you are not perfect and that you make mistakes. By being transparent in this regard, you help them to know that it is okay to fail once in awhile, especially when you can teach them how to correctly handle failure by learning to build on those experiences for future successes! Be sure your children set realistic goals; this is the best defense against repeated failure. Again, look for natural tendencies and foster those qualities by encouraging them to pursue their interests with gusto.

By ensuring that you are intimately involved with your children’s activities, you will keep the line of communication open to talk through issues they may encounter, thus helping them deal with any problems in a positive manner. Anything you can do to build character and boost self esteem in your children is a great formula for them succeeding in life.

Deciding to hire a nanny is always a big decision, and one that will greatly impact any family. Both the parents and children often have a lot to get used to when it comes to switching up the normal childcare routine. Beginning with a nanny when a child is an infant can be challenging enough, but starting with a nanny when a child is a toddler presents special challenges. A child care nanny must have basic care skills down to a T, and adding professional educator, first aid administrator, and child psychologist to the resume couldn’t hurt either. More so than with an infant, it is important to make a good child nanny match when considering a caregiver for a toddler that has already developed certain strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Some of the following points will be the most important to consider when picking the best nanny for your toddler.

Can the child care nanny candidate help your toddler develop a daily routine? For toddlers routine can be important in creating a safe, stable environment in which they feel free to expand physically and mentally. If a nanny is unable to maintain regular hours, or is subject to frequent absences, the strain may be harming your toddler.

Is the child nanny prepared with First-Aid and CPR training, and willing to assist in basic toddler healthcare needs? The healthcare needs of a toddler can range from dealing with bedwetting and toilet training, to suffering from common toddler ailments like constipation, rashes, problems sleeping, stuffy noses and sneezing, and vomiting. There’s a bit more of an “ick” factor when dealing with toddler messes than with those of an infant, and a new nanny should be prepared. Finding if a new nanny has experience potty training will be paramount, as will determining past experience specifically caring for toddlers.

Will the child care nanny stimulate the child mentally? By the age of 3 children are more than ready to begin expressing themselves verbally, artistically, emotionally, you name it. An appropriate nanny will be excited and encouraging when it comes to directing your toddler’s educational progress. A nanny should be willing to do projects and crafts with your child, to engage in playtime activities, and spend time reading or working with educational toys on shapes, letters, colors and numbers.

Can the nanny keep up with a toddler physically? This particular query has more to do with ambition than age. Many younger nannies just don’t have the chops to stay on their feet running around with a toddler for hours on end, whereas many retirement-aged candidates might. Keep the individual in mind, and make sure that the child nanny will be willing to engage in physically beneficial activities like playing outside or going to the park with your toddler.

Finally, does your toddler like the nanny? Although many children will initially undergo separation anxiety, especially when they aren’t used to being away from Mom and Dad, within the span of a nanny trial period it is possible to know whether toddler and nanny are getting on well. This will generally have a lot to do with how the nanny handles issues like separation anxiety, discipline, daily frustrations, and developing emotions and interests in the life of your toddler. Make a point of spending some time all together every few weeks to get a good reading on how things are going with your new toddler-nanny matchup.

The subject of nanny cameras is one that is the source of some debate amongst many people. There are those that believe that the use of such cameras should not be necessary – after all, if you can’t fully trust your nanny then why are you hiring them for in the first place?

But the opposite school of thought says that it’s not just about keeping an eye on the nanny, and that it is as much about protecting the nanny as it is about protecting your children. If a situation arose where your child hurt his or herself accidentally, then having that back-up is something that they may appreciate themselves to prove that they have done nothing wrong.

Whichever school of thought you may belong to, there’s no doubting that owning a nanny camera (or indeed more than one) is a sensible suggestion to anyone that has a family and has to rely on outside care. These devices are now so well built these days and can be built into a staggering array of household items that they need never be discovered and can always remain anonymous.

Amongst the items that you can have them built into are common household objects such as a tissue box or even a cigarette packet! This all may sound a little bit ‘James Bond’ but what you will find is that some nanny camera manufacturers will even create devices to order depending on in what you would like them to be built. Ultimately, many people like to have them built into items such as clocks or phones as those items can then be used for their original purpose as well.

The legality of the use of such cameras is something that, understandably, many people worry about. You should not have to worry too much about this though as you will tend to find that most distributors and manufacturers of these cameras will make them completely within the confines of the law and indeed inform you of any potential legal issues that may or may not arise. You won’t need to go burying your head in any legal textbooks, don’t worry!

As for pricing, in this age of financial uncertainty it’s very much understandable that you would not want to be forking out a huge amount of money on anything, really. This is certainly one market though where prices are generally falling. In general, nanny cameras can range in price really dependent in what object you wish to hide them in. Inevitably, if you want to hide them in an electrical device, you’d expect the prices to generally be more expensive, but that’s not necessarily the case.

Like with all products, you have to shop around. We would largely advise you don’t buy nanny cameras from eBay if at all necessary as our research has shown us that there are really very few reputable and specialist suppliers in this market there. A quick trip onto Google will throw up many stockists and suppliers and therefore it should not be difficult for you to quickly compare prices. There is a real movement within the market though to try and make the prices generally cheaper and more affordable for families.

There is certainly a lot to consider as regards the subject of nanny cameras and, obviously, it would be ideal to live in a society where such devices would not be necessary. Unfortunately though, we don’t, but there’s no doubting that they can certainly make you and your family feel safer and more comfortable in your own home.

When the main theme of a baby shower hinges on the gender of the baby it is really important to make sure the theme is clear and carried out through every aspect of the party. A baby girl shower needs to make people think all about girls and the typical girl stereotypes work well to get this theme across. Baby girl shower decorations should focus on the color pink and generally convey the image of girls.

Some good baby girl decoration ideas include mirrors, bows, frills and lace. Small mirror and comb sets tied together with bows do double duty as table d
