The Interview

It’s important to have an arsenal of questions prepared for your nanny when she arrives for her interview. There are a lot of things you will want to find out and you don’t want to forget an important question and later remember that it was something that you really needed to know. One of the most important things to find out about with your nanny is what her qualifications are. Has she been a nanny before? What is her educational background? Has she had special training in things like CPR or First Aid for children and infants? Another important part of the interviewing process is letting your nanny applicant know who you and your family are. Take the time to tell her exactly what you are looking for in a nanny and how your family functions. This is not a time to be vague. Letting your potential nanny know exactly how things work in your home and what is expected of her will help to ensure that you find the right person. In addition, this can help you to avoid potential problems with your nanny down the line. It will also help to give you a sense of whether or not you and your potential nanny see eye to eye on child rearing techniques and general care of the household.

* Another great tip for nanny interviewing is to ask open ended questions. An open ended question is one where the person has to give more than a yes or no answer. This gets the person talking and therefore you can learn a lot more about her and her beliefs.

* Checking references is an important next step to the interview process. Getting a chance to hear what previous employers have thought of the work of your nanny will give you a good idea of what you can expect.

* Background check. This will probably be your final step in the process, but it’s an important one. No matter how much you like your potential nanny and feel that she is trustworthy, it’s better to know for sure that she has no criminal history, abuse history, and that she is who she says that she is.

Part of the interview process that you can’t prepare for is whether or not you and the potential nanny click. This is one of the most important things because a nanny could look great in her resume, but then you find that the two of you just don’t get along very well, or maybe that she doesn’t get along well with the children or your partner. Choosing A Toddler’s Backpack

If your child has just turned two he or she will probably think that they are completely independent now. A good way to encourage them and to plan some fun in the park is to buy them a backpack.

It is important to choose the correct back pack for your toddler or you may find that you end up carrying it! Firstly the backpack must not be too long. You do not want to have the backpack pulling down or getting in the way on the slide (you may find that your child is not always willing to take off their new back pack once you get to the park!).

Secondly it is important that you cannot fit too much in their back pack. There will be days when your toddler will want to take their entire car or doll collection out with them, if the back pack is fairly small then they will realize that not everything will fit into it – and hence will learn to limit their park toys.

Keeping it practical is an important part of everything to do with a toddler. You can guarantee that your toddler will want to carry their own picnic snacks – so make sure that your toddlers backpack is easy to clean. It needs to be lined so you can just wipe out the inside. It is also probably a good idea to avoid the fabric outer layered ones as these get wet and waterlogged, and the mud sticks firmly to them.

Now comes the really difficult choice – what should your toddlers backpack have on it? Well, be warned that if you go for a recognized children’s character such as Noddy or Spiderman there is the chance that you child will decide that they no longer like this character and then they will want a new backpack! If you choose something more general such as a fireman bag, or a bag which is quite plain and you can pretend it is whatever you want it to be; one day it can be Dora the Explorers bag, the next day it can be Diego’s backpack; it can be a doctors bag, whatever you child thinks of, you can pretend it is.

Finally you need to make sure that you don’t end up carrying your toddler’s bag. Toddlers learn all the time from copying, so the more respect you give an item the more respect your child will give it. It might be a fun idea to give your toddler an old mobile phone which is no longer in use (remember to take out the battery for safety), and a key ring with an old key on it. Then when you are leaving home you can run through a check list; my bag, my keys, my phone; your bag, your keys, your phone. By doing this together he will see how important your bag is and will hopefully place a similar importance on his own bag.

Now you are ready to head out together. If you are going on a long bus or train journey, I found it useful to sometimes hide a little present in the bottom of the bag, so just when it is all getting boring and the other passengers are starting to stare, you can get your toddler to delve into their bag and find a special treat – if this is wrapped up, it will take up even more of the journey while they open it!

Will Your Child Be Safe With Their Future Nanny?

Your child is your treasure and you want to have peace of mind when leaving them behind under the care of a nanny. How can one know who is a genuine and caring nanny? After both parents leave the house it is solely the nanny’s domain and she can do anything in the house she wants or anything with your child. The safest way is to do a perfect and skillful nanny background check before choosing the right nanny.

Even if you get a nanny who has been recommended by your close friend or relative, it is always the best idea to do a check on her background. She could be really good or have a past that might cost you a lot of dismay. The first attempt to checking your child’s nanny is to ask for her original driver’s license or ID card, educational background and passport if this is the situation. Demand the original as photocopies can be faked. Though trust is crucial, genuine people are rare.

Get at least three references from your nanny. Check the references provided by the nanny. This used to be the best and most important nanny background check that you could achieve. However, today with all the privacy acts in force people will give you very little information about a previous employee for fear of being sued. Online services sometimes will give you a more realistic picture. If a previous employer will talk with you do a bit of change in the nanny’s background and see if they agree to the information or give you a better or a worse picture of the nanny.

Get a letter of authorization from the applicant which will give you permission to do a nanny background check and retrieve a credit report. Your application should include a request for the applicant’s birth date and social security number. Check all references provided by the nanny thoroughly, including her relatives and former employers. Get all their views together and analyze the good and the bad practices of the nanny.

It would be good to also purchase a credit report on the applicant as well. Theft might be a consideration if the applicant has low credit scores due to a poor credit history.

Another thing to consider is also doing a background check on the nanny’s family members. You can check sex offender records, criminal and arrest records on these people as well because they will also have access to your home and family. Simply modify your application to collect information on the applicant and all family members.

You can expect to spend less than $75 to do a thorough online nanny background check and retrieve a credit report in order to be totally convinced that she is the right nanny for your child. After employing your child’s nanny, don’t trust her wholeheartedly with the home and your child, do surprise checks on her by hopping into the house at different timings. Don’t stick to the regular home coming time; change it frequently so it will not give her a lead to be relaxed totally while you are away at work.

Some parents even install video cams so that they can keep an eye on their home and children while they are at work. This would require that you have access to a computer where your work.

A mutual understanding between the nanny and the employer is mandatory. After becoming satisfied with the nanny background check, the next thing is that your child should feel comfortable with the nanny since he/she will be spending a lot of time with the nanny. Another thought is to make the nanny happy and comfortable in your home and she will show the same care and concern for your child while you are away.
