Preparing Your Child For Daycare

One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was to leave my child at daycare for the first time ever and head off to work. Even though I mentally prepared myself for months, tears streamed down my face as I drove off from my son’s daycare. The funny thing was my son was just fine.

When you are considering daycare for your child be sure to involve your child in the process as much as possible. Bring your child to the daycare that you are considering attending. If you’ve set up an interview with a daycare provider, bring your child along. This will enable your child the opportunity to get familiar with the provider right from the get-go. Children pick up things really quickly and the sooner the exposure to the daycare provider the better.

Once you’ve made a decision regarding daycare, ask the provider if it’s possible for you to attend the daycare with your child before you actually leave him alone for good.

Most providers will not have an issue with this. If you stay with your child it will give your child the chance to explore the wonderful things that the daycare has to offer while having the security of mom or dad by his side. This can be done for about one or two days for as long as you wish to stay with your child. For example, you can come to the daycare at about 8:00am, sit and play with your child for about half an hour and then let your child know that you have to go but you’ll be back later to pick him up. This can then be repeated the next day. Children are very big on routines and this is just another routine for him to follow. Mom is going to drop me off, I’ll play and have a great day and then she’ll be back to pick me up.

Of course every child is different and so will their adjustment to the daycare also be different. Some children will adjust within one day although others will take a bit longer. Give your child the chance to adjust at his own pace. Once at home keep the process going. Talk to your child about his day. Also, you can get him involved in preparations for the next day, such as asking your child what he’d like to wear or helping you to get his diaper bag ready with extra clothes, diapers. This will give your child a sense of control over his circumstances.

Any change can be difficult especially for a child, although with some planning and patience your child will be ready for his wonderful and exciting daycare experience.

When looking for a home security camera system, it is important first to consider what you want to get out of the system. Many people will tell you that you need to spend thousands of dollars, and get cameras that have PTZ capabilities (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) in order to truly secure your home. The problem with that theory, is that in the meantime while you are waiting to save up the thousands of dollars for the system that some people tell you that you need, more vandalism and theft might still be occurring on your property. PTZ cameras are great, but for home installations, they are generally too large and too costly to be effective. So instead, lets look at what you want to get out of the system, because this will really determine what is necessary, and what is not for your system.

If you are looking to provide basic coverage of your property, so you can see if someone is on your property, then a wide-angle view is probably best for your circumstance. These cameras cover a wide view, allowing you to use a single camera to cover the whole yard. However, wide-angle cameras are not for every installation. These cameras provide a great coverage to see “What” is happening, but will have a hard time delivering “Who” is doing it, unless they are within 10-25 fee of the camera. As you get further from the camera, the person will appear smaller and smaller, because a wide-angle camera makes everything appear smaller in the viewport.

If you have a narrow “pinch-point”, gate or walkway that people must travel through during ingress or egress from your property, then it might make sense to complement the wide-angle cameras with a camera that has a narrower width of view, providing coverage of the specific narrow area with a fixed-zoom lens. This permits you to get more information and footage on the “Who” so that you can tell who is entering your property. When complemented by a wide-angle camera, which shows what is happening, then you can easily get the whole story. These narrower angle cameras (generally 8-12mm depending on distance) are very common to use for driveways, entry gates or even the side alley between your house and the neighbor. These cameras will give a much better view by bringing you closer to the action and delivering a higher quality picture for these narrow areas.

For recording, there are two main types of DVRs (Digital Video Recorders). These are not the same as your “Tivo” or other Cable/Satellite DVRs, these are devices that are designed specifically for recording from your home security cameras. The first type of DVR is the Standalone DVR. This DVR is a VCR-Sized digital video recorder that will record from the cameras onto an internal hard drive digitally, so that you can record when motion is detected and easily view live cameras and playback recorded footage right on your TV screen. These DVRs provide a great basic system for home users. The next type of system is a PC-Based DVR system. With the PC-Based DVR Cards, it is a card that installs into your Windows XP or Windows Vista PC to provide inputs for the security cameras. The cameras then record through the included software onto the hard drive of your PC. The PC-Based DVR Systems are generally slightly more advanced than the Standalone DVR systems, as they provide higher resolution recording and more remote viewing options generally. With PC-Based DVR systems, you also have the capability of expanding the system as needed, so you can start with 1 or 2 cameras to cover the most important areas and continue expanding the system as your needs and budget grow. With Standalone DVRs, you will be limited to the number of inputs provided by the DVR that you select.

Regardless of what system you choose, make sure that you are carefully selecting a system that will suit your needs and will provide the video quality and remote viewing capabilities that you require. Too often, we hear from customers who have bought systems for their home elsewhere, who are unhappy because they did not get a system that really suited their needs, even if it met their budget. So appropriate planning will ensure that you get a system that will perform as desired the first time…helping you stay within your desired budget for the home security camera system.

Have More Than One Babysitter

There are a lot of things that go on in a person’s life. Whether we like it or not, it happens to our babysitters as well. This can put a big damper in our lives also. You never know when something will come up and your babysitter won’t be able to show up. Then what do we do? Having backup babysitters are a great way of solving this dilemma.

I know what you’re thinking; it is hard enough to find one babysitter that we trust with our children. How in the world do you find a few backups? This can be easily resolved by choosing some during your initial babysitter search. There are a few babysitters out there that would be more interested in part time work rather than full time. This allows them to have other careers while still making a little extra money on the side.

However, if all of the babysitters that you interview are looking for full time work, this could cause a potential problem for backup babysitters. In this case, it could be good to use the good old word of mouth. For instance, I needed a babysitter every other Saturday morning for six weeks. My regular sitter wasn’t available for those times, so I asked some of my closest friends if they knew of any reliable babysitters. I was able to find one that worked well for those times. I was lucky however because I knew her mother so I was comfortable with my decision.

Even if you go through friends, you want to make sure that the babysitter is going to be comfortable with your children. I only needed this sitter for a couple of hours. Make sure that you keep the total number of hours in mind when finding the backup babysitter. You certainly don’t want to have a very young teenage watching your children for an extended period of time.

Another way I have done it is to go through the local newspaper. Older teens and college students are always in need of some extra money. They make great babysitters, especially if it is only occasionally. They are young enough to entertain your children while at the same time old enough to make rational decisions. A lot of children relate to them better than older babysitters. I know my children always get excited when they have their younger babysitter. In a crazy way, they think of it as a special treat.

Remember that the same rules apply if you go this way to find a backup babysitter. Use reference checks, background checks, and interaction interviews. I have found several backup babysitters over the last few years that have been wonderful. Even when they move on to full time careers, they still call when they have a day open to see if they can be with the girls. This is great, not only for the children, but for my husband and I as well.

All babysitters like a little bit of notice. If at all possible, try to give at least twelve hours notice. I for sure know that this is not always the case. That is why it is nice to have three or four babysitters that you can call. Your main babysitter could get sick or have a family emergency. This can put a big dent in your job or your planned night out. Having a few backups can usually help you out. Once in a while, you will be out of luck but this is very rare.

If you do have a few backup babysitters, it is nice to keep in contact with them. This is especially true if you don’t need to have them very often. You want them to know that you haven’t forgotten about them. If they don’t hear from you over a two week period or so, they might not be willing to baby sit for you. Make sure to communicate so that they know they are still important to you and your family.

Whether due to a bad experience in the past, or just plain first time jitters, many families today are setting up nanny cams while leaving their children in the hands of a home childcare provider. The big question, however, is whether doing so will truly improve the situation, or if it will make the employment situation worse for everyone involved from the parents to the children, and of course the child care nanny? Each family must consider for itself the pros and cons of using a nanny cam before setting one up somewhere in the home.

The first pitfall of a nanny cam is that it is, technically, illegal to record the nanny without her knowledge. This means that wise parents will be upfront about the situation from the beginning, and will have to ask the nanny questions about her feelings on the matter as early as the initial screening or interview. This harbors an environment of mistrust before you have even shook hands with the new nanny, and can understandably cause her to feel limited and paranoid while at work. Nobody wants a camera pointed at them while working at the office all day every day, so don’t expect any nanny, no matter how trustworthy and professional she may be, to jump at the idea.

As an alternative to using a nanny cam, it can often be enough to simply ask an adequate amount of questions of the nanny and references to get an idea of any troubles in the past. Not to mention, such seasoned nannies have seen nanny cams before, and will likely be aware of the camera whether or not you come clean about recording them. Another measure to take is asking both the child and nanny questions each day about what they did, how things went, and what went wrong. This will give the parent an idea if the child and nanny are on the same page, or if things don’t quite match up, which can raise a red flag.

Unlike other household employees, a nanny is someone whom which parents should have an extremely good relationship and an extremely high degree of trust. If you as a parent are already feeling suspicious of a nanny before she even steps through the door, expect to go through a long string of short term nannies before finding the right one. If you question a nanny’s judgment, it might be just as likely the nanny will question yours. Such mistrust definitely does not speak to longevity, as the relationship between parent, nanny and child has no solid platform to build from. When and if problems arise, such as the parent worrying about discipline, an unstable or inattentive nanny, or even petty theft, chances are (unless the entire house is wired) these things will be happening off-screen anyway. In such an instance, it is time to sit down with the nanny and a representative from the nanny agency and discuss the issue by asking the nanny questions which are well thought out, and relevant. In short, instead of watching hours and hours of uneventful footage, the average parent would be better served by keeping communication open with a new nanny that with even the most sophisticated nanny cam.

How To Choose Your Wedding Cake

One of my favorite parts about the wedding, is the cake. Over time many things have changed with weddings, but one thing that stays the same, there is always a beautiful cake. The wedding cake is a big part of the wedding, and something ‘everyone” remembers. So when deciding on which cake is right for your perfect day, there are many factors to take into consideration.

When is your wedding?

The date and location of your wedding is crucial when choosing the cake. For example if you plan on having your wedding in the summer at a hot location, things like mousse, or even ice cream cake might be out of the question Ask your baker what types of cake are in “season”

How big will the cake be?

Wedding cakes can come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional cakes which have several tiers are normally a great choice, and one your guests will remember. Depending on how many guests you have your options are limitless. Of course the biggest factor in deciding how large your wedding cake should be, is knowing how man guests you will have. The following website gives a great reference on how large your cake should be.

What’s your flavor?

Depending on the style of the cake, you have many different options. If the cake is multiple tiers, many people are choosing to have several different kinds of cake. Each level can be different, offering something for everyone. With wedding almost anything goes when it comes to the cake.

What kind of Icing?

Traditionally icing has been white or a light cream color. However today, many are matching their icing color with the overall theme of the wedding.. The actually icing can be a simple sugar and flour recipe, or even a rich cream cheese icing. There are many great icing ideas online which are sure to please even the most picky guests.

Decorations

Decorating a cake is only limited by your imagination. Some couples design the cake around the d

When you put out an advertisement for a babysitter, expect to get a lot of applicants. But what will determine if a babysitter is ideal or not? If you are new to the game, here are a few guidelines you can go by.

When to Hire a Babysitter

-You can both agree on an agreeable rate that is fit to her qualifications and will not cost you an arm and a leg.
-She appears responsible and can talk with authority. No matter what the babysitter’s age is, maturity is not necessarily proportional to it. If she does not project authority, the children may not obey her as a substitute parent figure.

-She knows how to handle an emergency. Training is a bonus, although not a necessity. If she is a level-headed person who knows what steps to take in a troublesome situation, she is a good bet and you can probably trust her. If she’s handled such situations admirably before, it is a good indication.

-She loves children and loves her job. Some good bets are students of child care professions or childhood education. Any person who loves her job will most likely do it well.

When Not to Hire a Babysitter

-She uses vulgar language in conversation. Although you can keep telling her not to use it in front of your kids, habits are hard to break. Your child may end up repeating it.

-She reeks of smoke or drink. If she is a habitual smoker or drinker, she might do these things during her babysitting visit. Secondhand smoke is harmful, especially if your child is an infant. Also, if she gets drunk before or during her visit, harm may come to your child.

-She has a criminal record. Naturally, you don’t want to let any seedy elements into your home and risk burglary or kidnapping.

-She appears moody or withdrawn. If she has an antisocial demeanor, it’s not likely that she can deal with children well.

-She seems too young or immature. You wouldn’t want to have an irresponsible child babysitting your children.

Taking these things into consideration will help you in your search for the ideal sitter. Remember that trusting your instincts about people is helpful.
