Dangers of Teenage Babysitters

Trying to find a babysitter? If so, it is important to consider the dangers of teenage babysitters before you hire one to watch your children.

Many parents opt to hire baby sitters for their child because of their work and relatively tied up schedules. Some would hire baby sitters who can take care of their child at their own home rather than bringing their child to a daycare center or somewhere else.

Hiring a baby sitter could be considered a very good way of ensuring that the child is kept safe at all times and is monitored closely by someone older however, the process of choosing the baby sitter in itself could already be considered a very daunting task.

Some teenagers who want summer jobs or to work after school try out babysitting and more and more parents think there is actually nothing wrong with hiring a teenager to take care of their child. However, one of the things that should be weighed when it comes to hiring a teenage baby sitter is that baby-sitting in itself requires a certain level of maturity and teenagers may not be that well equipped yet to handle this type of responsibility.

Caring for a child requires more than just opening your physical self to the one you are taking care of. True, baby sitting may require that you interact and play with the child; however, it also requires that you are able to be in command and should be someone whom the child will follow and respect. If you hire a teenager as your child’s babysitter, chances are she is not yet that mature to handle the pressures of babysitting.

You may want to look at the scenario this way:

A teenage babysitter could probably spend the most fun time with your child because their age are not that very far from each other; all the more if your baby sitter happens to have her own younger siblings. However, what will happen if your child suddenly gets caught on an accident like excessive bleeding of a wound from falling off his bike, or sudden fever and extensive vomiting?

A teenage baby sitter may not necessarily be able to handle these types of pressures and scenarios and may not be able to know what should be done.

If on the other hand, you hire an adult baby sitter or someone who has more background and experience when it comes to taking care of children, that particular baby sitter would know what to do and would not necessarily panic and rely on calling 911 or doctor.

Also, some teenage baby sitters, especially those who still go to school and will be coming from the school might have assignments and projects they need to work on immediately to meet the deadline. It is possible for them to do their homework at your home while your child is peacefully watching television. However, children have a very short attention span and would most likely move from one place to another. When this happens, your child could be at great risk.

It is therefore much better to hire adult baby sitters and those who have enough experience so that while you are at work and earning money to support your family, you can be assured that your child is being taken cared for.

Choosing the Proper Babysitter

There are times when you need to get away from the house for vacations or for work, and there is no one to take care of the kids. This is why we need babysitters to take care of our children, especially if your relatives cannot come to take care of them for you. Babysitters need to be picked carefully, since they will be in charge of keeping your baby safe and secure while you are gone. Babysitters come from all kinds of backgrounds, race, religions, and ages. This can make it hard to choose a babysitter if you can’t ask a friend to recommend one.

When hiring a babysitter, you should check out their previous clients and their other references. They will be able to tell you the quality of the babysitter’s skills and their abilities in taking care of children. Ask about how they handled the children when they were crying or stirring up trouble. Also, ask if the children liked their babysitter.

Ask if the babysitter knows how to deal with children of different ages. Children’s ages changes their attitude, behavior, and conduct. A babysitter should know how to deal with the needs of your children at their age. Also, make sure that they have the same morals and values that you do, so that your child will not become confused from conflicting ideas. Discipline is where most people differ in taking care of children, so talk to the potential babysitters and ask them about how they think disciplining should be done.

The age of the babysitter does not always necessarily matter. Their skills and maturity do not come with age, but with experience. Some younger babysitters may be more responsible than their older counterparts.

Once you find a sitter that you feel comfortable, you can invite them to your house and see how they interact with the children. They should have good chemistry and the children should like the sitter. If you find that they get along well and if you feel comfortable with leaving your children in their care, you can hire the babysitter.

When you leave the babysitter with your children, make sure to leave a note with all of the things that the sitter needs to know. Your contact numbers and where you’ll be staying, as well as emergency numbers, the food for the children and the babysitter, and the time that your children need to be put to bed are all important pieces of information that your babysitter needs to know.

When paying your babysitter, make sure that their salary is agreed upon at an earlier time. When choosing a babysitter, ask what amount he or she charges. Some may charge per hour, evening, or per child. Also, their pay should compensate for the things that they need to do around the house when babysitting.

Babysitter rates depend on various factors. If you hire a teenage babysitter from the neighborhood, you can expect to pay lesser than the amount you pay when you hire a babysitter from an agency. Here are the reasons why:

1. Experience and Number of Years in Service – Babysitters need experience to know how to handle kids with differing personalities. First-hand experiences also give you practical knowledge on kid psychology that teenage local babysitters don’t normally find in books. Needless to say, experience is a valuable teacher. The longer a person has been babysitting, the more skilled and the more knowledgeable she is expected to be in reacting to different situations or emergencies that may happen while you are out.

Experience, therefore, is one major factor when determining babysitter rates. Of course, there’s no guarantee or proof of experience. After all, neighborhood babysitters don’t get certificates or letters of recommendation from families they have worked in. The best way to get baby sitters with long years of experiences is to get them from babysitting agencies. But then again, naturally, they would have higher rates.

2. Babysitter Training – Babysitters need not have a college degree for babysitting in order to get hired. It is, however, important that you hire somebody who has even just a minimal amount of knowledge or training on first-aid and on emergencies that may occur anytime. Remember that you’re entrusting your child and your home and property to the babysitter. It is only imperative, then, that she has the presence of mind and that more or less, she knows what to do when there is emergency.

Babysitter rates are based on other more practical factors, too, such as the number of hours you require her to be in your home, the scope of her duties and responsibilities.

Nanny Agencies

Nannies play an important role in many families: they are often nurturers, sometimes educators, companions and caretakers or even mentors. Some parents find it necessary to employ live in nannies, while others prefer to hire part-time nannies or baby sitters who work on an as-need basis. Whatever the terms of agreement be, nannies usually become so intimately related with their employers’ families that it is of mutual benefit for both parties to make clear their respective expectations and limitations beforehand to avoid possible future disputes. This is where the Nanny Agencies play a vital role safeguarding both the employer’s and the nanny’s interests. Nanny Agencies are commercial professional institutions that interview, select, train and offer nannies for employment. People opt for nanny agencies not only because it’s the quickest way of sourcing them but also because of the assurance that she’ll be well trained in child care taking and her work quality will be ensured by the agency’s supervision. Also in case of leave-taking or accident, the agency ensures another Nanny to attend to the child immediately without any causing any unnecessary anxiety to the parents.

Nanny agencies allow their customers (those looking for a nanny) varied options like a nanny screening services, including nanny background checks or a US work authorization.

While the agency recruits and advertises, you have the right to screen, interview, hire and order a criminal background search for any nanny you choose.

A nanny agency lists hundreds of open nanny and household staffing jobs across the US and beyond for the nannies to apply. Jobs vary from live in or live out to full time or part time nanny, elder care or housekeeping jobs. Customers can also sign up for a Family Match to find a Nanny of their specifications of age, culture, religion or race. Nannies can apply for jobs here using the online registration form. Most of the agencies are fully web oriented and operate online.

Various agencies introduce schemes and lure customers by free searches, advice or other offers. However, it cannot be denied that though they give credibility to their sourced Nannies, they definitely charge a good extra overall fee from the customer for using their services.

Other services provided by a Nanny agency are arranging home visits or a confidential telephone consultation with baby & toddler sleep training consultants or breast feeding advisors, pediatric first aid training, sleep nannies, organic baby food tuition and baby feed online advisor.
