A lot of us have some babysitter horror stories to tell from our childhood…anything from a bad babysitter who just watched TV to some things that are really awful.

Luckily growing up, most of my babysitters were pretty responsible. They picked up after us and actually left the house looking better than when they arrived.

The worst babysitter, for me, was a sitter whose boyfriend came over and I learned what “pot” was. Not from using it, but because he had it. I still remember the night to this very day. My parents would have been horrified.

Because of these childhood situations, I value knowing exactly who is watching and caring for my own children. I don’t want them to learn things that they shouldn’t and I want a babysitter who will leave my house and my children better than when I left.

I also don’t want to worry about a babysitter who is too busy text-messaging her friends to be too concerned about the safety of my children.

Babysitting can be a very intimidating job especially if you are a beginner. Just knowing the fact that you are responsible for a young life can prove to be a little daunting. First of all, have a proper meeting with the parents and the child. This will obviously give you a better idea about the age and habits of he child, it will also help you understand the expectations parents have from you. Some parents do not like their kids being pampered, others would like you to maintain a certain distance. So, it is important that these issues are cleared out before you start babysitting.

Now, you must always understand that kids are looking for friends. You don’t have to be a strict mother like figure around them. It would be eaiser for you to bond with them if you could rather develop friendly relations with them. However, this has to be in sync with your role as an adult who is supposed to take care of the child. So, maintain a distance while being friends and having fun. You could play games with kids or watch cartoons. Activities like these help you create a bond with the kids.

One more thing, you have to be creative with kids. They might not listen to you directly, but if you can twist things around and make them sound more appealing, they might just budge. For example, if a kid is not ready to have food, try telling them a story and in the meantime you can feed them. Its amazing how they will respond to things they find interesting and fascinating. At the same time, always follow the parents’ instruction. You might have to be a little tough in the process. For example, if the parents have mentioned that ice cream is a complete no-no for their kid, then do not let him/her have it even if he/she pesters you for it.

And most importantly, show your love and affection to the kids and everything else will fall into place. They will start liking you and that will make your job a hell lot easier.

John and Melissa were enjoying their dinner at a local restaurant. It was the first time in six months that they had gone anywhere without their newborn baby.

When they arrived home, their nanny explained that the baby had rolled off the couch and hit her head on an end table. “She seemed O.K. but I called the doctor anyway,” said the nanny. “He’s on his way over here right now”.

With suspicion running through her mind, and not knowing what to believe, Melissa immediately went to her bedroom and turned on the monitor to her DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Weeks earlier, Melissa had purchased a hidden nanny cam disguised as a teddy bear, after hearing a story in the news about an abusive babysitter. In a few seconds she had her answer, the baby did just roll off the couch. That didn’t make it ok, but Melissa wanted to trust her new nanny and now she felt a little more certain that she could.
