With more and more working parents and families going nuclear, the concept of a domestic help/ Au pair/ nanny/ baby sitter has become popular every where. This throws up a great challenge as it is very difficult to find a professional babysitter. It is very important that you find a babysitter whom you can
entrust your little one without worrying much. This article will lead you to some pointers in choosing a good babysitter.

Motherhood or natural Love for Kids – It will be best if you can find a nanny who had been through motherhood. If you cannot find one, see if your babysitter has a natural affection towards kids. This will be useful as you need lot of patience with small kids.

Basic training – Kids are never idle and requires your attention all the time. Even when they sleep, things can happen and the babysitter should have some basic knowledge of first aid and emergency.

Experience – When it comes to handling kids, there should not be any compromise on the experience part. Experience will equip your babysitter with the confidence and the presence of mind to act accordingly to the many situations, both emergency or otherwise.

Language – It is best if your babysitter speaks the language you speak to your kids. When the kid is in the growing stages, it is best you don’t confuse them with multiple languages. If your baby is too small, then this really doesn’t matter.

Apart from the above qualities, ask them about their previous work place and inquire with them about their experience. This will throw a lot of insight about the general behavior of your baby sitter. For more useful parenting tips, you can visit our blog.

Day 1 : We just hired a live in nanny. She has a happy disposition and has a good background of experience as a nanny. The first thing she does is play with our little Sam, 3-years old, who instantly likes her.

Day 2: Nanny brought out her notebook of checklists. She asked me questions about little Sam from food allergies to developmental milestones.

Day3: Nanny familiarizes herself around the house and looks for the emergency exit. She is also quite keen on securely locking drawers and cabinets where household chemicals are present.

Day 3: It is socials night and it would be the first time that our new live in nanny will be alone with my toddler. Before leaving, she already has all the emergency numbers listed down and all I have to give her is our phone numbers and the restaurant’s number.

Day 4: It was an eventful day. The nanny did a Heimlich maneuver on little Sam when he started choking on the food he’s having. Thank goodness that we hired a CPR/First-Aid trained nanny.

Day 5: Little Sam pretend-play with the nanny as a superhero. They had fun exploring and keeping the house “safe”. He likes picking up his toys especially those he left lying on the stairs and in the hallways. His superhero line now is, “Somebody might trip over this. This is a job for Superhero Sam!”

Day 6: As our toddler becomes more active each day, Nanny made sure that the safety gate in his room’s doorway is secure all the time. She also puts a furniture near the glass sliding door every time little Sam is in the living room.

Day 7: My first day at work. When I got home, our live in nanny gave me a run down on little Sam’s activities for the day and the food he ate. I guess I don’t have to worry much about having to leave my toddler at home because I think I have found a super-nanny!

Is a Nanny For You?

For centuries families have employed nannies for the care of their children. A nanny is a child care provider, but moreover they, in most cases, become an essential part of the family. A nanny can be an absolute requirement in some situations. When both parents are gone for extended periods, a nanny can fill in as “surrogate” until their return. There are so many pros to employing a nanny rather than utilizing traditional day care facilities.

The children will be cared for in their clean home environment. Most children are happier with their toys, books and personal things. In a daycare environment, these items become limited in access due to the number of children and sanitary concerns. Another pro would be the ability to supervise the care a little more closely and to keep the environment controlled. Parents will know exactly where, when and what their children are up to with the nanny. A nanny is usually a great scheduler and sticks to a routine. Routine is so important with children and sometimes in a day care the only routine is you drop off and you pick up.

Many people only associate employing a nanny with the economic elite. However with the non-traditional work force of today, a nanny is more flexible and much more budget friendly than typical day care. Many parents today are able to work flex schedules, eliminating their commute, but clearly cannot get much done at home with young children. A nanny will see to the daily routine, with the nurturing care the parents also give. A parent who works from home may love to see their children when time allows throughout the day, and having the children at home with a nanny provides that opportunity. In the event that both parents must work, there are a multitude of work from home opportunities available.
