1. Explain Your Expectations before the Sitter Comes on the First Day

Once you’ve found a babysitter, go over the rules in your house and your expectations. If it is not possible to do this ahead of time, ask them to arrive early on the first day so that you can go over things. This will help to avoid any future misunderstandings.

2. Put Yourself in the Their Shoes

Make your home welcoming to the sitter. Make sure he or she knows how things work in your house. You may also want to consider special snacks or a movie that the sitter can enjoy after the kids are in bed.

3. Come Back on Time

Try to be home on time. If you say you will be home by a certain time…don’t be late. Your sitter may have other plans or other obligations. If you want them to babysit again, respect their time. If you must be late, always call to make sure that it is ok.

There are many controversial opinions about parents installing a hidden camera in their home to keep an eye on the nanny or babysitter. Many believe if parents feel the need to install a video camera then they should not let a nanny care for their children in the first place. We have all heard and watched horrifying news reports about nannies abusing the children they are supposed to be caring for. Many times the reason we do hear about these news reports is because a hidden camera was installed and an abusive nanny was caught on video.

Of course, not all nannies and babysitters are poor caregivers. Sadly, the media, more often than not, reports news about the bad guys – it’s not very often we hear about the good guys, or in this case the good babysitters. Even so, there are precautions parents should take before hiring a babysitter or nanny, regardless of installing a hidden camera. Interviewing the person you are interested in hiring is definitely a must. Ask questions such as, why they are a nanny, what would they do in an emergency, find out if they are certified in CPR and first aid, and you can even perform a criminal background check. You can never find out too much information about someone who may potentially care for your children.

If you don’t feel comfortable with the idea of secretly video taping your babysitter, even though it is in your own home, then you may want to consider disclosing to your nanny that you do have a hidden camera installed. Some say revealing that information defeats the purpose of having a nanny cam, because the babysitter knows they are being taped and may know what device is being used as a nanny camera and where it is actually located within the home. So, you’ve narrowed the nanny search down to a few prospective nannies. The larger items have been discussed – the pay, the work hours, vacation time, etc. – but you still need to talk to them about the finer points of being a nanny in your home. Your nanny needs to learn about your personality, your child’s personality as well as the rules of the house. Consider the following: How do you want your child disciplined? What do you want your nanny to do as far as handling day to day tasks? Do you want them to contact you in any situation or make decisions for themselves? Will you allow them to provide education to your child or just monitor their behavior? How will you and your nanny work together to resolve conflicts?

These are essential items to discuss. Get things started on the same page, without having any surprises down the road.

Child Interaction

It is essential to monitor the nanny’s interaction with your child during the interviewing process. In fact, let your child interview them, in a sense. For example, send them outside to play alone for a few minutes and monitor their interaction from a window.

Note certain things, such as how the nanny reacts if your child says “no!” and how the nanny reacts when your child asks a question. Doe they talk authoritatively or are they soft spoken?

The Second Interview

So, you’ve found someone that seems to be pretty good on paper and in person. Why bother with a second interview? The second interview provides another opportunity for you to observe the nanny working with your child. This is the perfect way for you to determine if they are getting along well and if they fit within your family’s personality.

Consider going on an outing with the nanny and your child as the second interview. Just remember that they aren’t working for you yet, so allow them only to interact with the child when they initiate it. The nanny should be able to interact with your child enough to convince them that she would be fun to play with.

During the outing, notice how well they pay attention to your child. Are they more concerned about impressing you rather than interacting with your child? Are they listening to the child and encouraging good behavior? Taking these things into account will help you to make the final decision about who the right nanny is.

Make the Decision

It’s time to select the right nanny for the job. Following is a checklist of items to take care of prior to your nanny’s first day on the job: Double check all personal and employment references. Do this even if they were referred by a nanny placement agency. Run a background check and a driver’s record check. Work through any unresolved issues with salary, hours, duties, etc. Come to an agreement on how discipline will be handled.

Once you’ve determined who the best nanny is, trust your intuition and hire the person you feel fits best for your child and for your family.

There are some great developmental toys out there that can be very helpful in entertaining your baby or children while you are out for the evening or on a daily basis with their nanny. Its great if you have someone that has the energy to entertain your child without putting them in front of the TV for the majority of time while you are out.

Its ok for your child to watch some TV, as long as it is educational in nature. There are a lot of TV shows that a nanny or caretaker can use to entertain your child throughout the day to help them facilitate a good level of learning at any age. There are a lot of good options out there if you need help with your children.
