The babysitter must be somebody who knows how to initiate activities and engage the child’s interest, yet can be respected.

Babysitter Rates – How Much is Acceptable?

The babysitter rate of pay varies depending on a few factors. For example, the number of children that will be cared for by the babysitter is one very important factor in determining the acceptable pay rate.

In addition, the ages of the children will also weigh heavily on the price you will have to pay a sitter. For example, a 10 year old that requires limited supervision will cost less per hour than a 2 year old with special needs.

Where you live is another factor that should be considered when you are determining an acceptable babysitter rate of pay. For example, in larger cities it is considered the norm to pay between $7-10 an hour.

In smaller cities you can expect to pay between $4-8 an hour for one child. You can better estimate the hourly rate for a babysitter by the cost of living in your area.

Typically, you can expect to pay an additional $1-2 an hour for each additional child. Keep in mind, the amount of experience an individual has with babysitting will also increase the cost per hour. Such as with a nanny that has been sitting for 15 years, you will spend at least twice as much then if you hired a high *********** that babysits after school and on the weekends to earn spending money.

The final weighing factor in the babysitter rate of pay is the time of day that you need the babysitter. Normally, you will pay more for a sitter in the late evening than you would during usual working hours. For example, if you need your sitter for an 11p-7a shift you should pay about $2 hours more per hour than if you needed a sitter for a 9a-5p shift.

Of course, if the going rate per hour for a sitter in your area is $8 and you only make $10 an hour, you can’t possibly pay the sitter $8. You will need to discuss with your sitter the number of hours you will need their services and then, together you will need to agree on a feasible babysitter rate.

It will need to be something that you feel comfortable with as well as the sitter. Do not feel obligated to pay the sitter the going rate. In most cases a sitter will work with you as long as the relationship will be long term.

When you’re thinking of hiring a babysitter, you should check various sources before you choose one. After doing so, you will end up with a handful of promising applicants. You can’t, of course, pick them all, though you can file the contact numbers of a few others for future reference.

When you’re left with these few good ones, it’s time to sit down and interview them. To guide you, you should make a small list of questions, similar to the following:

Babysitting Experience

Have you had any babysitting experience? Can you tell me about your previous experience? What were the ages of the children you babysat? What activities did you do together? How did you feel about the experience? Could you give me the contact numbers of your previous employers? If you haven’t had any experience, do you have younger siblings or children of your own?

Motives

Why did you get into babysitting? Do you enjoy it? What is it about the job that you like?

Training

Have you gone through first aid, disaster, or babysitting training? Do you know how to administer CPR? Do you know what to do about small cuts or sprains?

Emergencies

Do you have a list of emergency numbers to contact? Do you know what to do in case of fire? How about an earthquake? A robbery? Give some hypothetical situations.

Game Plan

How do you intend to proceed with your babysitting visit? Are there any activities or games you have in mind for the children? How do you plan to enforce discipline in case the child does not obey you or breaks the house rules?

Payment

Would you like to be paid an hourly rate, or for the entire week or month? Will you prefer a cash or check? What is your standard rate and is it negotiable?

How the prospective babysitter answers these questions will help you assess if it is a good idea to hire her. While talking to a person face to face won’t let you get to know her completely, it will give you some insight to her character and allow you to gauge if you would like her to work for you.

How To Choose The Best Childcare For Your Child

When selecting the childcare centre, find out how the staff relate to parents, children, and their peers. Good communication skills are very important; not just in being able to discuss your child with the caregiver but also your child will be unconsciously learning from them. Check if the centre is kept clean, the nappy changing area is sterile and hygienic, safety measures are in place, and there is a standard procedure for handling emergencies. It would also be advantageous to check if the centre has NCAC accreditation so that you are sure that the centre only employs qualified child minders to take care of your child.

The first few days in a daycare centre will be difficult for you and for your child but your child will soon get used to the routine and the new faces, and you will fully appreciate the service they render.

Instead of starting by seeing what is out there in terms of nanny professionals, begin by turning your focus in on your own family for step #1, analyzing your childcare needs and family situation. Know before ever contacting a nanny agency or other means whether you want a nanny to live-in, or live-out; what kind of schedule the nanny is needed for; what extra tasks like housework the nanny will be required to perform; whether the nanny need to be provided a car, etc. Think about exactly how much you can afford to spend on a nanny’s services and take all that information and write it up in a formal job description. With this written description in hand, it’s time to find a nanny.

A great place to start when looking for a nanny is with other families and friends that are currently employing a nanny. It is likely that good reliable nannies working in your social circle or neighborhood will know where to refer your family to find the same, whether it be a friend, a former coworker, or a great nanny agency. With step #2 completed, it’s time to move on to the technical end of things.

There are many legal and technical details to consider when hiring a nanny, including the International Nanny Association standards which constitute step #3. For example, a proper nanny must be at least 18 years of age, have proof of immunizations, be in good health, and have received a high school diploma or equivalent. If these bases are covered move on to a nanny background check (it’s always a good idea to do your own), a thorough interview, reference and work history check, and a review of everything from the nanny’s driving record, criminal history, and educational background.. Always be sure a new nanny candidate is legal to work in the United States before accepting her as an employee.

Should everything check out, it’s time to move on to step #4 where the nanny spends some time with your family. The child nanny relationship is one of the most important in this situation. Spend time with the nanny including one interview with the her alone, and another with her and the child together. Always be upfront and honest about expectations and job conditions during the interview, and don’t be afraid to ask tough questions. This person will be taking care of your child, so you’ll want the best possible nanny candidate for the job.

Lastly, don’t neglect the fact that you will now not only be a parent, but an employer. As such, you will have to comply with step #5, complying with Nanny Tax laws. This not only encompasses taxes nanny will have to pay, but the payroll taxes like federal and state unemployment insurance tax, and FICA you as an employer will have to pay. The bottom bracket for the tax is any nanny making more than $1,500 per year. If looking to hire a full time nanny she will likely be making quite a bit more than this, meaning you will have to comply with Nanny tax. Most families hire either a personal accountant, nanny agency, or purchase computer software to assist them with the Nanny tax registration and payment process.
