Jessica Tandy asked:

A babysitter is a person hired by a family to look after their children, especially in their absence. Hiring a babysitter is a common practice in many US households, but there are still a few parents who have concerns utilizing babysitting services with full confidence. In particular, it is difficult for the parents to decide whether or not the babysitter they have hired lives up to their expectations.

In this article, we will take a look at some of the qualities that a good babysitter should possess. Watching for these qualities in a babysitter when hiring, will help to ensure that you choose the best babysitter for your child.

Reliability and trustworthiness:
As you will be leaving the babysitter with your children, house, and valuables, you want her to be reliable and trustworthy. These essential qualities in a babysitter can be difficult to ascertain based on the external appearance alone. Therefore, it is advisable to check the babysitter’s references. Talk with people whom the babysitter has sat with before, and ask them about the conduct and personality of the sitter. This will help in giving you a clear picture of what kind of babysitter they are, helping you feel more comfortable and secure in the care your child will be receiving.

Enthusiastic about childcare:
Another factor to consider is the level of interest the babysitter has in caring for and nurturing children. As most babysitters are young high school/college students, who generally opt for babysitting as a part-time job to earn pocket money, it can be difficult to find people who are truly enthusiastic about this job. So, while hiring, you should make sure that the sitter likes children, enjoys being around them, loves to take care of them and will also be open to your methods of parenting. Hiring a sitter trained in first aid or CPR is an added advantage, as she will be equipped to handle emergency situations in a better fashion than someone who does not have such training.

Punctuality and dedication to work:
Though a babysitter has limited duties and is hired for a short period of time, she is expected to be punctual and dedicated to her work. Moreover, as babysitting services are often utilized in cases with short notice, i.e., having to attend an unexpected meeting or event, the babysitters are expected to arrive on time and perform their duties as specified. Checking with the babysitters’ references regarding punctuality will give you a good idea of whether or not she is someone who runs on time.

Ability to interact with children:
Not all children are alike or have common traits. Some are flexible, some are fearful and some may be feisty. A good babysitter should be able to identify your child’s personality, likes and dislikes, and within a short period of time develop a good rapport/relationship with them. She should also be able to come up with innovative ideas to entertain children and thus interact with them more easily. Be sure to look for a sitter who will interact well with your children.

Should match up with your personal preferences:
In addition to the above, you should give some thought to your personal preferences. Some may prefer a babysitter who is good at education, some may look for a sitter who is active and athletic, and some parents want someone who is going to be very caring and nurturing. So, depending upon your personal preferences you should choose a babysitter who will make you comfortable when they are around your children.

Hiring a babysitter from a reputable referral agency is advisable for parents as they should be able to provide you with babysitters who have already undergone a thorough screening process and necessary background checks. Utilizing the services of a referral agency will relieve you of the burden of conducting interviews, background checks, and checking references, thereby saving you a lot of time.

How to Pay Your Babysitter

If you’ve never hired a babysitter before, one of the things a practical parent may worry about is payment. Fortunately, babysitters aren’t too expensive. They usually range from about four to twelve dollars per hour, depending on a few factors:

Factors that Affect a Babysitter’s Salary

-Their amount of previous experience. Obviously, those with more experience will ask for a higher rate.

-Any training they’ve had that is relevant to babysitting, such as CPR, first aid, a -babysitting workshop, or child care.

-The age of your children. Some ages require a lot of supervision, while others only require minimal supervision. Infants generally require the most supervision because they cannot be let out of sight.

-Additional tasks you assign her that are outside the usual scope of babysitting. These can be the care of pets, tutoring the child, or keeping the house tidy.

-Room and board, food, and other benefits you are offering. The more benefits you offer, the less money you can expect to her.

-The number of hours she will be babysitting. If she is staying overnight or on a holiday, it is to be expected that she will get an overnight bonus.

-The babysitter’s age often matters. Most teenagers charge much less than an adult sitter.

When you are interviewing the babysitter, one of the important questions is her salary expectation. Compare your own expectations. If she has a standard rate, or if she comes from an agency, you may be expected to stand by it. You may also negotiate in most cases, if she is a freelancer. Here, you can bring up the factors that may affect payment. Agree upon how you are to pay her- whether it will be a set rate for the entire month or hourly.

When you have agreed on a certain salary, ask her if she prefers cash or credit.

Babysitter services are not uncommonly today. It is therefore impossible for you not to find a good sitter. The good services of your sitter however, depend to some extent on how you communicate with your sitter and how you treat her. Here are some good points to remember when dealing with your sitter.

Settle the Rate

Agree on is the sitter’s rate. The rate will depend on a couple of factors. These include age of the sitter, number of kids to watch over, ages of the kids, amount of work to be done, hours of work and experience of the sitter. Unfortunately, there is no set rule for coming up with a permanent sitter rate. What you have to do then is to carefully talk to your sitter about an agreeable rate considering various factors. These days, it is usually quite unacceptable to pay a sitter below $3. You would have to pay over that depending on what you agree on.

Set Rules for Dealing with Kids

Clear and concrete rules and instructions. If you want your sitter to be effective, you have to tell her what you want. You have to be very clear and specific with your instructions. Tell her what you allow your kids to eat or to watch on T.V. Give instructions on what to do when your child misbehaves or refuses to follow instructions.

One good example is the schedule. If schedules have to be followed, then be sure to tell her about that. This may include schedules for naptime, sleep time, classes and snacks. If there are any special concerns such as a toddler that is prone to tantrums, then be sure to tell your sitter in advance.

Set Rules for the Sitter

Do you have specific rules in mind for your sitter to follow? Your babysitter service provider should also know if you have rules for her to follow. It is only natural for you to set some guidelines since she will be staying in your house. At the same time though, you should be prepared not to be too strict with your sitter. It would be very unreasonable for example not to allow your sitter to use any of your things in your living room or kitchen. The guidelines you should set may have something to do with the length of personal calls, sleeping on duty and having personal visitors while on duty.

Always Ask Questions

Have a brief chat with your sitter when you get home. Ask her how things went and if she enjoyed being with your kids. This would also be a good time to address specific concerns. Your sitter for example may have had a particularly difficult time with handling one of your kids. Ask her how she dealt with the situation and make sure to praise her if she did a good job at handling it.

Be Generous

Meals – Never forget to leave your sitter something to eat or drink. This is a basic courtesy. Even if you are paying her, it would be a sign of generosity on your part to offer her something extra. This is an especially good idea if she hasn’t eaten her meal yet. Being extra kind and generous on your sitter would make her feel that only the best kind of service is expected from her.

What is the current babysitter rate? This seems to be one of the most common questions asked these days. It is also a question that doesn’t have one definite answer. On the average, sitters are usually paid anywhere from $3-$12. This seems to be quite a wide bracket. This is only because there are several factors that determine the exact rate of pay.

Location

Regions and areas may have slightly different rates. Urban areas in particular may have steeper rates than rural ones. You may be able to get an idea of rates in your particular area by looking for online average rates. You could also survey your neighbors on how much they would consider paying a sitter. If you have a particular preference for a sitter who lives far away, you may have to pay her extra due to transportation expenses.

Number of Kids

Another big determining factor for the rates is the number of kids. You can hardly expect a sitter to work for only $3 if she has to watch over three kids or more. Aside from the number of kids, you also have to consider the ages of the kids she has to look after. Younger kids and babies are naturally more difficult to watch over. They may be hard to discipline and they have many needs that require the babysitter’s attention. You would therefore have to pay a high rate if you have a toddler. You would have to pay an even higher rate if you have more than one toddler.

Sitter’s Age

The age of the sitter is also another factor which affects the rate. Teens aged 16-18 and adults would naturally have to be paid higher than younger sitters. Those who are in the 11-15 years old bracket may be contented with $3-$5 an hour. You need to be choosy though. You can’t just pick a young sitter just because she has a lower rate. You would really need an older teen or an adult sitter if you have lots of kids or if you have young kids that need minding. Young babysitters may not know how to handle small kids or respond to emergency situations.

Experience

The sitter’s babysitting experience should also be considered, of course. Those who have extensive experience would charge a lot. Those who have special first aid and emergency training would also want to receive more.

Work Details

Most babysitter rates cover only basic babysitting duties. Often though, you would have to ask your sitter to perform a couple of extra tasks. You may have to pay extra if you expect her to cook for the kids or tutor them. Other work details that affect the rate include number of hours of work and specific hours of the day on duty. Night sitters may require high rates.

Specific Days on the Month

Some babysitters will charge more for particular days of the month. Expect to pay more for sitters who work on rest days, holidays and Sundays.

There are other factors that can affect the babysitter rate. What you have to really do to find your sitter’s exact rate is to talk to your sitter. Negotiate on a rate that both of you will find acceptable.

A List of Great Babysitting Games

If you want to be a fantastic babysitter, then just need to know the secrets of the business. Make sure you present yourself as a mature, responsible, and friendly person and you are halfway there! These traits will make the parents love you, but the real challenge is winning over the kids. They are not happy that their parents are leaving them for the evening and they are going to make sure that you, the baby sitter, know that they are unhappy. You might need to call on all your patience reserves and really turn on your kid entertainment skills but, if you are successful, everyone will end up have a fantastic time. They will even not want you to leave at the end of the night if you do the job right. Here are a few great babysitting games and activities you should have ready to go.

Play-dough is always a fun option. Check with the parents before they leave to make sure it is all right with them that the kids get a little messy. Bring along an old bed sheet or a few old towels to use to cover the floor. It will make clean up easier! For great play-dough recipes, look online, but the main ingredients are flour, vegetable oil, cream of tartar, and salt. If you want it to be colorful, bring along some food dye! The kids will love playing with the gooey play-dough; it will entertain them for hours!

Arts and crafts prove to be a winner every time. You might have to tailor this game to the age of the children for whom you are sitting, but there are several different great options. Younger toddlers are more than happy to take scrap pieces of paper and color. You can also bring coloring books so that they can practice coloring inside the lines. For older children, you should take some origami folding books and paper. They will love learning how to fold different kinds of animals and objects with your help!

Board games, card games, and playing in the backyard are other popular options. Once you have worn them out, either by playing with play-dough or throwing balls around in the yard, you should have a few fun movies and great books on hand. Ask the kids if they would prefer to watch a film or hear a story before bedtime.

You will be an instant hit with the kids if you have some great babysitting games and activities lined up. Have fun and you’ll have more babysitter jobs than you know what to do with!

Have you finally found a good babysitter but have no idea what to pay them and what charges for babysitting are considered fair? You’re not alone, this is a common dilemma for parents. They want to pay a reasonable rate to a babysitter but they also don’t want to pay more than they need to. Luckily there are certain things to consider that should help you determine a fair babysitting rate.

The average babysitting rate these days is typically around $10 per hour but babysitting wages can vary widely anywhere from as little as $5 per hour all the way up to $17 per hour or more! The reason for such a wide range is due to three main factors: location, experience, and number of children being cared for:

Location of Family

Where you live does play a role in what to pay a babysitter. Typically if you live in a large city like New York where the cost of living is higher, babysitting rates are also higher when compared to smaller cities and rural ares. Babysitting is a job like any else so babysitter rates will be affected by the location you are currently living in.

Experience of Babysitter

How much experience a babysitter has is one of the most important considerations in determining a reasonable babysitting rate. A high school student with little or no experience would normally earn less than an experienced adult. All other factors aside, teenagers are often happy to babysit for $5 per hour whereas an adult with a number of years experience would expect at least $10 per hour. It really all depends on your childcare requirements and what type of babysitter you are comfortable with caring for your children; It’s a personal choice.

Number of Children

This is pretty much a given; the more children you have needing a babysitter, the more work it’s going to be for a babysitter and the more money you should consider paying them. How much extra should you pay for looking after more than a single child? It can vary but usually around $1 or $2 per additional child is most common these days.

A Day Care Vs a Babysitter

Many households require two incomes to meet their financial needs. This can be difficult when you still have small children that are not attending grade school. You will need to decide who will care for your child while you are away. The most common options would be a daycare provider or babysitter.

A babysitter allows your children to stay in your home or a home nearby. Most likely the number of children being watched will be small and your child may receive extra attention. Having your child cared for at home can also eliminate some of the illness that are easily passed by children such as the flu. Babysitters may not be trained as thoroughly as a daycare staff so your child may not learn as much but rather just be in a safe environment.

A day care can also provide personal attention for your child depending in the staff to child ratio. Most daycares require training for staff members. The environment is most likely much more structured around learning and helping your child to grow. It may be learning colors, sounds, or letters, this type of head start can benefit any child preparing to enter school. You can also be more confident that a daycare is operating within the laws of the state regarding childcare, whereas a babysitter may not have the permissions or credentials to watch over children. It may be wise to research the laws within your own state.

Whether you choose to use a daycare or baby sitter you should do your research and make sure you are making the best decision for your child.
