Highchairs. There is just so much choice out there, it can be confusing. Below I’ve outlined the main things I considered when buying a highchair:
1. Safety – this is the most important factor. All highchairs sold in the UK have to comply with current safety standards, but it’s always worth checking to make sure of this. However if you are buying a second hand baby chair or it’s being passed on to you from a friend or family member, it’s worth checking that the chair is safe and complies with UK safety regulations.
2. Space – is space a consideration or do you have lots of it? If you are short on space like many new parents, then this becomes an important factor. You could consider getting a folding highchair which can be put away when not in use. Before you buy, make sure you check how easy it is to fold and unfold as you’ll be doing this several times a day.
3. Style – You can get highchairs made of wood, metal and plastic. Which style will suit your home best and consider colours too. You’re going to have to see this chair everyday, so while it may not sound like the most important point, it is definitely important.
4. Budget – this is another very important consideration and will narrow the options available to you once you decide on a budget. You can spend hundreds or you can buy a second hand baby highchair for very little. The choice is yours. It’s worth bearing in mind that highchairs aren’t typically used for very long but if you do intend to have more children, you may want to spend a bit more to make sure it lasts for as long as you need it.
5. Ease of cleaning – You’re going to be cleaning your baby’s highchair at least 3 times a day so you definitely want one that’s very easy to clean.
6. Comfort – Your baby will use the highchair daily and so you want him/her to be comfortable. The size of the highchair seat is probably the most important for comfort – if your baby is big will they have enough space to be comfortable? As your baby grows, will they still fit comfortably in their highchair? Also consider how easy it is to take your baby in and out of the highchair.
7. Highchair with more – You can get highchairs that turn in to a little table and chair once they’re no longer needed as a highchair. Is this something that would be useful for you and your lifestyle?
