And irresponsible sitters are not good sitters.

2. Your child is not happy when he or she knows the sitter is coming or when you talk about her. If your child looks fearful or reacts in fear over the sitter, you can be sure something is wrong. Babysitters should be lovable and loved by your child. If she is a good one, your child will be happy to see her once your child gets to know her.

3. Your child has become anxious or nervous since you started using your sitter. This is another bad sign; although there may be other reasons your child may be acting like this. If your child seems anxious or nervous, it is a signal that your sitter may be the reason.

4. Your sitter does not want to talk about what she and your child did while you were gone. Every parent wants to know how things went when they get home…in detail. If your sitter seems to avoid telling you or is very vague about the babysitting session that can be a sign that she is not doing her job.

5. Your babysitter does not do the things you asked her to do while watching your child. Most parents leave a list of important thing to do for the sitter. If your sitter wants to do her own thing and ignores your things, that is bad. She is supposed to be working for you and supporting your efforts to raise your child.

6. Too many booboos (accidents). Accidents and booboos do happen, but they should be few and far between while being watched by a babysitter. After all, watching your child is her whole responsibility while you are away. And if she is doing her job and not chatting on her cell phone most of the time, then very few accidents will happen. Of course, accidents happen even when your child is with you, but they still should be very seldom when with a sitter.

7. Your child is dirty and your home is messy when you get home. This should seldom, if ever happen. Of course you do not hire a babysitter to clean your house, and messes can happen right before you get home. But, if she is conscientious, she will usually have both your child and your home looking as good as when you left when you get home.

The services of part time nannies are more suitable for those who need regular nannies only for a few hours during the day and on a permanent basis. Due to their high levels of qualifications, part-time nannies are said to be hard to come by because some prefer to have full time work. However, this has to be in sync with your role as an adult who is supposed to take care of the child. So, maintain a distance while being friends and having fun. You could play games with kids or watch cartoons. Activities like these help you create a bond with the kids.

One more thing, you have to be creative with kids. They might not listen to you directly, but if you can twist things around and make them sound more appealing, they might just budge. For example, if a kid is not ready to have food, try telling them a story and in the meantime you can feed them. Its amazing how they will respond to things they find interesting and fascinating. At the same time, always follow the parents’ instruction. You might have to be a little tough in the process. For example, if the parents have mentioned that ice cream is a complete no-no for their kid, then do not let him/her have it even if he/she pesters you for it.

And most importantly, show your love and affection to the kids and everything else will fall into place. They will start liking you and that will make your job a hell lot easier.

Include your child; see how your child feels with the new babysitter. Do you and your child feel comfortable with this person? Do they seem nice and friendly and genuinely caring? Which will only facilitate the best care possible.

How old do I have to be?

It depends on the state in which you live, but most agree that 12 or 13 are okay ages to start babysitting. Actually, most states don’t have a minimum age, and let 11 year olds babysit. But Illinois says the babysitter needs to be 13 years old and babysit for a limited amount of time. If you’re in the younger age range, ask your parents if they think you’re old enough to babysit. If they say, “no,” ask them what you can do to become a babysitter. If they say, “You’ve never babysat before, how would you know what to do?” Then you can say, “Is it okay if I watch my younger cousin in our house while you’re home? You can watch me and help as needed so that I can learn to be a babysitter.” Most parents will think that’s a responsible and mature first step. Plus, you’ll find out if babysitting really is something you want to do. Watching little kids is hard work.

Tips for starting your babysitting business

Think safety. Your job as the babysitter is to keep the kids safe. So to increase your confidence and impress the kids parents, take an American Red Cross babysitting course http://www.redcross.org. It’s designed for 11 to 15 year olds. You’ll learn how to handle emergencies like injuries, illnesses, and household accidents. They’ll also teach you how to care for children of different ages, how to be a leader and role model, and how to make good decisions and solve problems. Think how that’ll look on your resume! Put together a notebook for your business. Inside you’ll want a calendar so that you can schedule your babysitting jobs. A list of important numbers like the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. It can be called 24 hours a day no matter where you live. Also, have phone numbers to the police and fire departments. You’ll also want a sheet where you’ll fill in the information about the people you’re babysitting for. List their names, where they’ll be, how they can be reached, and an alternate emergency phone number to call just in case they can’t be reached. You never know when their cell phone may be in a non-service area. It doesn’t hurt to also put the names of the kids on the family sheet to aid your memory. Other things you may want to add are safe activities that can be played with certain age groups. Copies of your resume can go in it, too. Take this notebook with you on your jobs and add to it as necessary. Know the ages of the kids you’re able to babysit. If just starting out you may not be ready to watch babies, and that’s perfectly understandable. So until you feel comfortable with the younger children, don’t take those jobs quite yet. Notice that I said “yet.” As you get older and babysit more, you’ll be able to watch all age groups. Get references. When you’ve babysat for someone a few times and they know how good of a job you do, you may want to get a reference. You can either have them write a reference in letter form or they may simply just want to give their phone number so that people looking to hire you will have someone to call so that they can check and be sure you’re able to safely watch their kids. Eventually, you can use the other family as a reference, too. Keep building your resume. Begin now, even if there’s not much to put on it. Your name, address, phone number, skills, interests, what type of jobs you’re looking for, clubs and activities you’ve done in school, any volunteer work, babysitting jobs, and at the bottom you can state ‘references available upon request’ (if you have them). Make a copies so that you have them available if needed. You’ll be building and changing your resume for your entire working career.

You’ve grown up and you’re ready to start your own babysitting business. This entrepreneurial attitude that you have will get you far in life, and bring great satisfaction to you while helping others at the same time.

Always remember to have the parents write down their cell phone numbers, where they will be, a few close by relative’s phone numbers and of course the children’s pediatrician’s number. Make sure poison control numbers are also easily located. You never know what children may do in the absence of their parents, and it is better to be safe than story. Most importantly, always have a list of foods that each child is allergic to so you can make sure they do not eat or drink these items. Always know the fire escape routes that lead out of the house in case of emergency.

Other babysitting tips include always tending to the children in your care. Do not just watch television or talk on the phone while you are babysitting. You are getting paid to interact and play with these children. Maybe think of a fun craft or a fun board game that everyone can participate in. Keeping yourself and the children busy will make the night go by much quicker and will make for much happier children too.

Remember that bed time may not go easy since they are used to their parents putting them to bed. Try to read the kids a good night story. Usually by the time you are done with the story the children will be fast asleep. Once you get the children to sleep you will be relieved and have some free time to yourself. Do expect the kids to test your limits especially during bedtime. But stand your grounds and let them know you are boss. Depending on the ages of the children you are babysitting, you typically do not ever want to fall asleep while getting paid for babysitting. If a baby awoke in the middle of the night you may not hear them so it is best to remain awake until the parents come home.

The last set of babysitting tips I am going to include has to do with payment. Always get your payment as soon as your service has ended. Do not let families try to say they will pay you next time because there may not be a next time. Many people have learned this lesson the hard way. It is also best to accept cash if you only babysat for a particular family 1 or 2 times. Once you find regular babysitting jobs and you are more comfortable with the family and children it is acceptable to take checks but for the first few times I would only request cash.
