When it comes to picking a nanny, this can be one of the most important choices that any family ends up making. After all, choosing a nanny isn’t the same as choosing a contractor or deciding who should be the person to repair the kitchen sink the next time there is a leak. This is someone who has the most important job in your house: caring for your child. And whether you are talking about an infant or a pre-teen, it makes sense that you would be concerned about the kind of care that your child would be receiving. Thus, the right kind of research, along with a clear game plan for the sort of questions you might want to ask during the initial nanny interview, makes the most amount of sense in the long run.
To start, there is deciding whether or not you want to be hiring a nanny through a nanny agency, an online nanny service, Craigslist or word-of-mouth. While there might be advantages to hiring through an agency, like extensive nanny background checks, that in no way means that you shouldn’t schedule time to conduct a nanny interview with potential candidates from an agency in the same manner that you would hire a nanny who came directly or through Craigslist.
Be sure that you are always equally diligent when it comes to checking facts and references, as it is crucial that you do that extra legwork. After all, this is someone that you are leaving to care for your children. It makes sense that, above all, you would be interested in the safest and most reliable person.
When it comes time to have your nanny interview, one of the most important things aside from knowing the right sort of nanny questions you need to be asking is that you and your spouse are on the same page about what your actual needs are. Discuss ahead of time if you are looking for a full-time or part-time nanny, if you are expecting this to be a live-in nanny position or not, and also be clear about what the budget is. If the budget and the person you want to hire simply do not match, it is not going to be something that works out for you.
When it comes time for the actual nanny interview, be sure that you ask a lot of clear questions about her style of child rearing, as well as asking if she is certified in CPR. Try to get a sense of her background, and talk about her experiences with previous employers. Above all, this person needs to be a good personality fit with you. If you’re just not clicking, it might be worthwhile to consider talking with someone else. Don’t assume that you have to settle: this is one area where settling is actually not a great idea in the least.
